Hobby Lobby to Jews: 'We Don't Cater To You People'

(RNS) Hanukkah comes early this year. But it apparently never comes to Hobby Lobby. The national craft store owned by conservative billionaire Steve Green seemingly refuses to carry merchandise related to Hanukkah because of Green’s “Christian values,” and some Jews are taking offense.

“I will never set foot in a Hobby Lobby. Ever.” wrote Ken Berwitz, the New Jersey blogger who brought the Hobby Lobby Hanukkah flap to light in a Friday (Sept. 27) blog post.

Berwitz’s outrage has spread to other bloggers who are taking Hobby Lobby to task as a store that courts the general public, but refuses to stock anything related to Judaism — even in communities with significant Jewish populations.

anti-semitism, anti-catholicism, anti-religion is as bigoted and wrong as racism, sexism or homophobia. unftly its alive and well in these semi-united states as well as the rest of the world.

while as a private company they have the right to stock or not stock whatever they want, its bad business and just dumb.

Conservatives will argue they have the right to discriminate. However, when Gays and Jews boycott its them who are being unfair and Un American.Most Conservatives do not feel all men are created equal.Just like Jesus says in their version of history.

Is this something that Hobby Lobby has confirmed? Rumors get started and are difficult to kill. Remember the rumor that Tommy Hilfiger didn't want African-Americans wearing his clothes? He supposedly told that to Oprah. Two problems: He was never on Oprah, and he never said any such thing.

Snopes dot com is usually a good source for checking whether something is true or is an urban legend. I'll check the Hobby Lobby thing out and report back.

No. It's not a public position. It was a sales rep at one of the stores in a predominantly Jewish community who stated "We don't cater to you people." However, it is true that Hobby Lobby does not sell anything related to the Jewish holidays.

That's a very good reminder, PTOPhan. As I said in another thread, check multiple sources. Apparently a blogger said that an employee said this to him/her.

Here's the company's response:

Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. is currently working with our buyers over our merchandise selection. Due to multiple customer requests, we are currently evaluating our Holiday items and what we will carry in the future.

Alleged comments made by employees are currently being investigated and will be addressed accordingly. These comments are in no way indicative of Hobby Lobby culture, the owners and the operators.

Marlboro is a great city and has wonderful people and we are blessed to be apart the community.

Jews don't go to no Hobby Lobbies. You know what kind of lobbies we go to?

We go to HOTEL lobbies. We go to OFFICE BUILDING lobbies. We go to Boca and West Palm CONDO lobbies.

We go to lobbies where there is a nice couch and maybe a sculpture maybe. A lot of glass and chrome. (And someone who polishes it.) And elevators, with buttons and mirrors, you can check your hair.

The AMA has a lobby.

Mothers Against Drunks--they have a lobby. Sure, they have a lobby. What do you think--Mothers Against Drunks wouldn't have a LOBBY?

The Rifle people have a lobby...a BIG lobby. AIPAC has a lobby...oy, vat a lobby! AARP has a lobby...oh, yes, a VUNDERFUL lobby.

I like the AARP. They give good discounts.

Jack Abramoff. A nice Jewish boy. He had a lobby, an Indian lobby...but he took a little wampum on the side or something, I don't know, and he landed in jail.

But it was a nice jail. It was a jail with a LOBBY.

But a HOBBY lobby? That's not a Jewish thing! That's not even a Jewish rhyme.

We have a Hobby Lobby in town. I was there a few times, years ago. Bought picture frames. I thought it was better than Michael's or JoAnn's at the time.

Now ... not so much.
