Texas Gov. Rick Perry, during a visit that focused primarily on economic issues, drew on a reference to alcoholism to explain his view of homosexuality.
Perry's comments to the Commonwealth Club of California came after Texas' Republican Convention on Saturday sanctioned platform language allowing Texans to seek voluntary counseling to "cure" being gay.
The paper says that the governor responded that "whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that."
He said: "I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way."

Fixed it for you, Ricky.
I love the way he's so proud of his ignorance.
It doesn't matter anyway because Hillary won the election the moment Eric Cantor lost on Tuesday.
As an alcoholic I am OFFENDED by this.
So if Homosexuality is a disease like alcoholism is, it means you are never cured, abstinece is the only route. Hmmmmm not following his brilliant mind.

Whenever I give up homosexuality I end up having a major slip.
^ Falling directly onto the surfboard.
I'm singing on the mic til my voice hoarse
Then I fill the tub up halfway then ride it with my surfboard, surfboard, surfboard
Graining on that wood, graining, graining on that wood
I'm swerving on that, swerving, swerving on that big body
Been serving all this, swerve, surfing all in this good, good...
LMAO!!

I get a little sobriety under my belt whenever I quit homosexuality and then I think I can have just one little sip and the next thing I know I'm bingeing on homosex til I black out.

Imagine those meetings?
Hello, I'm Sebastian...I've sucked 3 (bleep) and taken 2 up the (bleep) in the past 24 hours. Then again...vaguely sounds like a conversation overheard in any gay bar if you listen carefully.
shaking my head - there will ALWAYS be idiots out there thinking homosexuality can be cured. Unfortunately we know there is no mass cure for stupidity except those who win the Darwin Award.
My name is Carlos-Alberto and I am a raging ALCOHOLIC, HOMOSEXUAL *AND* PUERTO RICAN.
You do the math.
LMAO.
Do you get those sobriety chips for going so many days without boning another guy?
I think Tim Gunn would be the only person who knows the answer to that question.
"You do the math."
I think you meant, you do the meth.

Hello, I'm Sebastian...I've sucked 3 (bleep) and taken 2 up the (bleep) in the past 24 hours.
That wouldn't even be close to my bottom line.
What frightens me to death, is this is the level of stupidity we allow to govern our country!
"It doesn't matter anyway because Hillary won the election the moment Eric Cantor lost on Tuesday."
God I hope not.
That wouldn't even be close to my bottom line.
Correction: "come close"

I'll say!
Even if I were to abstain from practicing homosexual acts, I'd still be gay.
I'd still be committed to all the Democratic principles which are the beautiful foundation of this country AND which Rick and his Ignorant Ilk are trying to destroy. I'd still fight for the rights of the poor, the marginal, the dis-enfranchised. I'd still care about the environment, freedom of the press, and the quality of public education. I'd still support bike lanes. I'd still sing show tunes.
I'd probably just be much grouchier, and I would consume a LOT more gay porn.
Is that Rick's secret agenda? To support the Gay Porn industry????

Honestly, the man has proven himself to be nothing more than a complete bonehead since the 2012 Presidential Primaries, but maybe it traces even further than that.

Great contribution to the discussion.
As is yours. Go away!
i hate to say it but Perry's idiotic statement perfectly illustrates the problem with the "born this way" therefore it's ok to be gay litmus test.
Being born anything doesn't make that thing intrinsically acceptable, good, unacceptable or bad. Some research suggests that people can be born with destructive preconditions.
Being gay is not destructive. Being gay is good and acceptable because there is nothing wrong with being gay. Period. Whether being gay is genetically encoded or acquired through experience, or genetically encoded for some and not for others, is of socially scientific interest. It might even inform to a certain extent debates about equal rights.
But it does not resolve moral and political questions about equal rights.
