Saw it again last night, and liked it even more the second time. This is a LOT better than your average horror film. The attention to detail, the suspense, the acting... Good stuff. Not to mention that there is a sustained sense of humor, as well as some other really interesting touches.
And, I still don't think the movie is homophobic (in fact, I got the feeling that one of the main characters was coming to terms with his own sexuality) or overly exploitive (the torture scenes are short, and they mostly cut away, leaving you to imagine what's happening).
I obviously don't hold anything against those who hated this, but I really liked it, and I do think that Eli Roth is going to be the next big horror director. As I said before, he knows what he's doing.

I liked his style, and the film had some... unique elements. It also stuck very closely to the rhythms of the 70s "backwoods" splatter flicks. I had to give him credit for that much. The only problem was he had no idea how to turn them into a comprehensible movie. This is not the case with Hostel, in which the material is not only disturbing and quite disgusting, but also though-provoking.
Like I said, his work in Cabin Fever didn't particularly interest me, but I saw that he had potential.

I could have resurrected one of many Hostel threads, but I decided folks would enjoy a lil Di2 memory lane.
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT (schmeh)
As for the film: contrived (WAY too many coincidences at the end--yawn) and very homophobic:
1. "fag" this "fag" that "that's gay" this "that's gay" that
2. the killer is a latent homosexual--yippee
3. the character that would seem to be coming out? Is saved from such a fate by the hot sex he has with the girl. Sure, I can comprehend such complexities and imagine the boy coming to terms later in life in that situation, but the film clearly paints a picture that all he needed was a lil Italian ***** and he would be A-OK. And that is DEF what an ignorant audience would gather.
Very disappointed in Tarantino for backing this film--yes, it had some great ideas, but schmeh.
SCHMEH SCHMEH SCHMEH SCHMEH SCHMEH!

I think sometimes people read too much into things. I didn't find the movie homophobic at all. People say "that's gay" all the time. It's just a slang way of saying things. I say it all the time, but I'm in no way homophobic. It's the same as saying "that sucks." And I'm not sure what you're talking about, but you thought the main character was trying to come out? Or did I miss your point? Either way, I didn't get that from the film at all.
And the movie is pretty horrible. It is half porn/ half gore. But even the gore isn't that good. If you want a good gorey, scary movie check out Saw I and II. They have really great storylines and keep you interested.

Posted: 6/24/06 at 3:11pmI thought both Saw films had interesting storylines. I just thought they were poorly acted, written, and directed.

and it's OK that 'gay' = 'that sucks'?? no. not cool at all. just because something is a saying doesn't make it acceptable.
and it was all the 'fag' comments that were what offended me.
and, yes, there was a homosexual subtext with Josh as well as the killer. the scene in the bar made it very clear.
so, no, I wasn't reading too much into things. it was quite clear. and not needed, nor cool.

If you like suspension and tension...get "Hard Candy" when it comes out in DVD...or if you are outside the US, it may be playing in theaters.
It's a visceral experience!
