SPOILER THREAD:

Would love to hear what people think of the bandaging scene. But I also have a question

Whose hand is the first doing the overt caressing? It seems like it was Meechum's, which seems a bit surprising, though not incredible, but I've watched it ten times now and it's still not completely clear.

I'm sure someone with less spatial distraction than I have might have an answer.

I only watched the scene once, but I believe Meechum made the first move during hand sex. I think the series did a nice job setting up the scene so that it didn't feel completely WTF.

But can we PLEASE discuss my single favorite line from any television show ever (from the S. 2 Ep. 1):

'I'm willing to let your child wither and die inside you if that's what's required.'

That line was more shocking than anything else in this fabulous series.

I, for one, thought it was a "WTF moment" not because of Frank (we knew he was bisexual) but simply because this extreme shift of intense focus on Meechum for several minutes felt kind of uneven and out of place. I'm not sure what its true purpose was. To simply highlight the complicated dynamics of Claire and Frank's marriage? I liked the more subtle approach to exposing this and a threesome isn't exactly subtle.

It wasn't WTF for me because I knew exactly where the show was headed when Meechum gave Frank the cufflinks for his birthday. Plus, I don't think the show is all that subtle in general. I found it far less shocking than poor Road Kill Mara.

I knew the whole Meechum thing was coming. Wasn't it the episode before where they have the drinks together outside? They practically shot Frank's beer bottle as a stand in phallus.
Off topic...but the one thing I can't stand about this show is the guy with the pet guinea pig. It's like he walked off the set of a really bad James Bond parody.

The threesome scene was second most shocking to me, the first of course being the subway scene. I didn't see the threesome coming, though. All I thought was that Frank and his wife didn't have sex in their marriage but they of course had that open agreement.

I won't argue that I saw the threesome coming...but I did see some kind of sexual relationship playing out between Frank and Meechum. The threesome was delightful because Robin Wright was involved and anything she does on this series is perfection.

I saw sex between Meechum and Claire coming in the scene where she offers him the bourbon and saw sex with the three of them coming when Frank walked in, but not before. I don't see the scene as gratuitous. Frank and Claire enjoy sex with others and Claire, in her "house arrest," has been unable to get any offsite. Also at this point (I haven't seen beyond this episode and no one knows beyond this season), so I don't know if the scene may have an afterlife; it not having one, things going on as before as if nothing had happened is itself interesting. The only thing that surprised me is that Meechum, even drunk and having flirted with Claire (as he might have before Frank arrived), would have felt comfortable and bold enough to caress Frank's hand like that. But who knows? Maybe Claire planted the idea over their drinks.

I think THAT SCENE was telegraphed last season. While Claire's involvement might appear somewhat spontaneous, I sense that Frank had been calculating the encounter for some time. Otherwise, last season's revelation of Frank's proclivities would have served little purpose.

Lording over everyone in their ambit means everything to the Underwoods. Due to the heightened security they needed an outlet. Frank helped Meechum obtain the premier security detail for someone in his profession so Meechum felt hugely indebted to him. And Claire played the dutiful role of Frank's chief enabler. Her participation was of paramount importance. Without it, the scene could have been rather off-putting for many viewers who wouldn't otherwise be disturbed by Meechum going gay-for-pay.

The writers cleverly gave Meechum an out provided it was a one-off encounter, I suggest.

You think Meechum was gay-for-pay? I didn't get that at all. I think it was an honest desire on Meechum's part. Otherwise, boring.

Yes, Meechum is indebted to Frank. But he was also totally into it. It worked.

YES. Robin Wright is so delicious in this role. She should win every award out there.

I am obsessed with this show. So much so that I don't even mind Kevin Spacey at his Kevin Spacey-est. I know he has his detractors, but he is killing it as Frank Underwood.

No, I don't but that's how several colleagues size it up. According to them, in real life Meechum would have a snowball's chance in hell of landing that plush security detail with his limited experience. They also think that Frank exploited the situation by taking advantage of Meechum's unwavering devotion to him, with Claire getting credit for the assist. Even I don't think that the deed would have been done without Claire giving it the green light.

I just think that depicting a married VP of the US initiating a sexual interlude with another man in front of his wife is still a tough trick to pull off in any context. Fortunately, the Internet gives HOC the creative license to at least attempt it.

ETA: The series is my guilty pleasure. It just works on some many levels. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright were born for their roles on the show.

Gotcha! And I, too, love Spacey in this. I've actually never had too much of a problem with him. I think he's a damn good actor, I appreciate his commitment to the theater and I always find him charming and very funny when off the cuff in interviews. I've known people who have worked with him who love him. I get that he has his bag of tricks, but I buy it. Especially on this show. And Robin Wright is epic. EPIC.
