Okay, I'm back...had to conduct a little business...
DGrant...your friends are quite right. The upwardly mobile middle class black population exerts great power in Atlanta city government. For years, that political power base has co-existed with the (largely) white business structure and that is what has propelled Atlanta into it's supposed role as the "capital of the New South". Sometimes the relationship has been tenuous...but it has worked for the most part. Traditionally white upper middle class suburbs are becoming more diverse. White singles, couples and families have moved back into the city and real estate has skyrocketed. Gay folks have gentrified the old hippie area of Midtown and the town of Decatur (amongst others) and real estate has boomed and now everyone wants to be in those areas (of course). My house in the Brookhaven/Buckhead area of Atlanta has appreciated about $150,000 in value since I bought it in 1997. (I just got my latest tax assessment for my home in the mail today - boo hiss!). Also, the Latino/Hispanic population in Atlanta is booming (as it is in many areas of the US).
The latest controversy is that Sandy Springs, a relatively wealthy unincorporated 'town' just north of Atlanta...wants to vote to emancipate itself from the rest of Atlanta...and be responsible for its own future. Another proposal wants to split Fulton County (where Atlanta is) into 2 separate counties as it used to be years ago. Aahhh...we shall see.
Atlanta has its problems like any other large city...traffic, crime, relatively poor public transportation...but I think that the advantages...relatively good weather year round, good economy, trees/parks/rolling terrain, active cultural scene, good restaurants/shopping/nightlife/theatre/concerts/professional sports, good services, accessibilty to airport/not too far from ocean/mountains, diverse population, active real estate market...outweigh the disadvantages. I love to travel but I love coming home and living here.

Isn't it great when you like where you live?
I read not to long ago that the airport has officially become the busiest in the country!

Yes...I am very appreciative for the blessings in my life.
We can always look at the things that aren't so nice...or things that aren't fair in life...but at the end of the day I try to be positive and realize that I and most of the folks on this message board ... have won life's lottery already...and we can think and act to make the world ...and our own corner of the world...a better place to live!
And...yes...Atlanta's airport is one of the country's busiest. We go back and forth with O'Hare for the "busiest" title. I was impressed at how quickly we got through security last Fri. and how quickly our baggage came up after we got home from NYC.

Posted: 4/21/05 at 3:53pmI always choose to walk on the sunny side of the street, myself! One need only look around BRIEFLY to see how blessed we are - and it really isn't that difficult to focus on that and help others along the way to do the same.

For DGrant and us all:
Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worries on the doorstep
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear the pitter-pat?
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be complete
On the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade with those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid because this rover crossed over!
And if I never had a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
With gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street
Have a great evening, Boobs!!!!

I love all your avatars. You've made some very good choices!
So I hear you're all godmothers to shira and you're all using the names of Sleeping Beauty's fairy godmothers? LOL. That's cute.

Marquise - Shira is making sure she has fairy godfathers wherever she needs them - you may be drafted to cover the south-east. Goodness knows you could help in the line of her corruption in South Beach

Well... jumping on the bandwagon when not invited... but being that I'm an official Hussy now, Shira might need a fairy-godfather in the PacNW, no? Granted, I'm only a fairy-godfather-in-training, but still...
