Besty, are you CRITICIZING us? How negative! Go over to the other thread and criticize us there!!!
I think SWEENEY is a great movie. I give it 4 neck slashes out of 5
Criticizing you? For being "happy?"
No.
EDIT: I'm merely using positively negative reinforcement of your negative positivity.
I'm so confused. There is such a fine line between unbridled happiness and unmitigated misery, you know? One man's "Sweeney Todd" is another man's "My Fair Lady"!
One man's "Sweeney Todd" is another man's "My Fair Lady"!
So true.
In fact, "My Fair Sweeney" would be an awesome movie. Johnny Depp wandering down the "street where you live" with his razors, while Henry Higgins (played by Corky St. Clair) teaches Mrs. Lovett how to speak "correckly."
Good stuff.
I feel like I am tripping on something (too many mentions of MY FAIR LADY will screw up one's mind, I heard), but this thread is dipping into the realm of "doesn't make too much damn sense." I mean, it's fun to visit from time to time but it's not a place to bunk for the night.
Spidey, that was positively negative in its unhappy cheerfulness.
Yeah, I'm taking pills for that. Sorry for the momentary lapse in thinking. The moment has passed. Thanks for the pep talk, coach
I love 42nd Street, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Top Hat, as well. Although they weren't adaptations, so I suppose they don't count. I also love Finian's Rainbow and don't understand why it's part of that other thread. I won't even post on that one. Such negativity!
Petula Clark AND Fred Astaire! What's not to like?
Even Santa Claus approves of Finian's Rainbow.
Under the Pink Xmas Tree
I remember seeing Finnian's Rainbow as a kid in the movie theatre. They had a big display in the lobby with a cardboard rainbow and a black pot filled with rocks that were spray-painted gold and sprinkled with gold glitter.
LOL
I think I pocketed one and took it home with me.
And I love that Santa brought you this movie, Miss Penny! It's got a great commentary track by Frances Ford Coppola. He has a refreshingly humorous take on his "first feature film" as a director. Very enlightening and entertaining.
I saw Finian's Rainbow in a movie theatre as a kid, too, Besty. In Chinatown. I went with my Aunt Mary who loved Judy Garland so much that when we went on vacation and someone asked her name, she used to answer, "Judy." The day Judy died, Aunt Mary was positively inconsolable.
She used to work in Hollywood for Edith Head. She was asked to be an extra in the Frederic March "Les Miserables." We would watch it when it was on TV, on her tiny black & white set, and she would point herself out: a mere dot among the throngs. Those were the days.
It's funny, but, I don't think I ever saw a musical on the "big screen" that I didn't enjoy. Everything doesn't translate to the box as well, I guess.
(B, don't tell my son about the gold rock. He'll start dropping hints about wanting to take it home for his collection.)
A more recent (made for tv) adaptation that I adore is Reefer Madness.
Having seen and not enjoyed the stage version I can say that the tone of the movie was pitch perfect.
And Ana Gasteyer was amazing.
OMG, Reefer Madness. Definitely one of the best adaptions. Love it.
How can any of us forget the GREATEST movie musical of all time:
STOP THE PLANET OF THE APES, I WANT TO GET OFF!
Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off!
Although I can't really figure out how to classify this. It's a musical adaptation of a movie, but it's on stage even though it is animated and is really a TV show.
And who could forget "Oh, Streetcar!" Their musical version of "A Streetcar Named Desire."
I fully expect these episodes to transfer to the Great White Way any day now.
I am just a simple paperboy,
No romance do I seek...
I just wanted forty cents,
For my deliveries last week...
Will this bewitching floozy,
Seduce this humble newsie?
Oh, what's a paperboy to...
Dooo?
I love Finian's Rainbow...and the sexy Don Francks!
GREAT rendition of "Devil Moon".
I love Petula Clark singing "Look to the Rainbow" and "Glocca Morra" in that movie, too. Her voice is perfect for those songs, and the arrangements are beautiful. Ken Darby's choral background vocals on Look to the Rainbow are particularly great.
She truly was perfect for the role. She and Don had real sparks!
Here's "Look to the Rainbow" and "Glocca Morra" from the movie ... with a great last line from Fred Astaire.

So I watched Sweeney again and I enjoyed a lot more the second time. Not having all the hype (both positive and negative) so recently in my mind made it easier to just appreciate it for what it was.
One opinion that I retain from my first viewing is that HBC gives a great performance acting-wise but just destroys all her songs. It kinda took me out of the moment. I soooo wish they had dubbed her singing.
Otherwise I loved it this time. And Depp sounded fine to me.
Does anyone else think that the kid who plays Anthony has crazy eyes? He looks slightly insane.

I truly love her singing in this; I guess that she goes to show how vast the scope of taste can be. I think it's perfect for the role and the style of the movie.
Plus, she's got "limited wind."
I thought her performance was great though. Even better than Johnny's IMO. And I don't mind a "thin" voice, but I had a hard time understanding her. I know all the lyrics so it didn't hamper my understanding of the story, but it pained me to hear some of those great lines swallowed.
Particularly in The Worst Pies In London, God That's Good, and Poor Thing.
Wait and By The Sea were fine.
