The stage versions of Singin' in the Rain and Seven Brides came AFTER the films.
Those were both original movie musicals, neither one adapted from stage musicals.

How about The Band Wagon? It threw out the script of the original stage show (all revue sketches) and kept the score.
I love the movie even more than Singing in the Rain.

besty - ah yes. My bad.
Wasn't a fan of the 7 brides stage production

I never saw it, Craig.
I remember when I was in junior high, a Seven Brides tour came through with Howard Keel and Jane Powell (the original movie's stars). Still didn't see it.
I knew without Tommy Rall, Russ Tamblyn, Jacques d'Amboise, Julie Newmar, Ruta Lee, et al, it wouldn't be the same.
Even back then, I wasn't a fan of "Xeroxing" a movie musical on stage.
Other original movie musicals that LATER became Broadway musicals: Meet Me in St. Louis, Gigi, Mary Poppins, and White Christmas.
I saw Poppins, hated it, and have skipped all the others.

PJ, I love the Band Wagon! Yes, it was a massive rewrite.
I also love the Gay Divorcee and Babes in Arms (and the aforementioned On the Town). All underwent major reconstruction, either in book or score or both, for the film versions.

That's what I thought about the 2 films, but I wasn't sure.
I just want to know what was so great about 1776 to people who mentioned it. I didn't care for it myself. I just remember being bored by it, but it's been about 6 years since I last saw it.

I love the laserdisc version of 1776, which is complete. Even if Blythe Danner is horrid in her role, imo. PJ, I hate everything about the "Once A Year Day" number, as staged by Fosse. It wastes really great dance music, with stupid movements and no dancing. I can't imagine why my PMs are turned off, but thanks. I'll check it out.
Edit: My setting is to accept PMs, so I've no clue why it won't allow someone to PM me.

I agree with everything JB said (up to and including his loving 1776 despite Blythe Danner).
I know that BELLS ARE RINGING isn't a "great" musical, but for the simple fact that we have nearly 2 hours of Judy Holliday and her charismatic brilliance, I love it. (Not to mention Frank Gorshin's Brando wannabe.)

I don't understand the PM thing! Anybody have any suggestions?
I HATE the film version of On the Town. All that great music, gone. And for what? Inferior tunes, instead! I've come to the conclusion that I really do not like Gene Kelly. He's enormously talented, but I just detest his persona on screen. I know PJ, you love him; and I promise that's not why I don't.

Posted: 1/5/10 at 3:03pmI agree about Gene Kelly -- that sh*t eating grin and whiny voice always grate on my nerves. He's occasionally charming, as in the "I Got Rhythm" number in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, though.

Okay, this is for the BEST musicals. Not the BITCH-FEST musicals or the musicals you like to sh*t on. That's in the other thread.
Read, people.

I will, if you and JB2 lighten up and go back to that alternate universe you live in where Chicago and My Fair Lady are sh*tty movies!
Crappin' on every single thread and everyone else's opinions, I tells ya! No restraint.
Might I direct you to the WORST musicals thread? You two can go to town over there ...

Goodness gracious me and mine, besty. It's just the alternate universe where people are allowed to express their opinions freely, and occasionally differ.
Again. Lighten the f*uck up.

"Babes in Arms" is one of my all time favorite movies. They really need to release it on DVD separate from a box set. Grr!
Ps. "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" bores the hell out of me
