For me-the very best is a tie between Hedwig and Cabaret.
EXCELLENT choices, Jane.

thanks, P. In a way, some could say that Hedwig was better than the stage show. Of course, there's nothing like the live show, but I thought the film answered some questions which the show left unanswered.

Oh, we GOTTA throw GREASE in here!
I liked Hair, Taz. AND Grease!
Grease! For sure!
And I've always loved The Sound of Music.
I also loved the movie adaptation of Chicago.
I loved Hairspray. Little Shop was great, too (I actually liked the ending better in the film than the stage version), and I actually enjoy the film version of Fiddler on the Roof, even though they cut some of my favorite parts.
But then again, I also really enjoyed Sweeney Todd-- I realize the cast couldn't sing, and they cut my favorite song, but I loved it-- and it's the ONLY Tim Burton film I've ever liked. I'm not a fan of Johnny Depp normally, but I actually liked him in this movie. But maybe that's because I've always detested George Hearn's version of Sweeney and I was sick of seeing it played so melodramatically (my favorite Sweeney Todd was Len Cariou by a mile, even though he didn't even attempt an English accent).
What a nice thread, jane!
I have to agree with Stockard: The Sound of Music is the rare adaptation that actually improves on the original.
Robert Wise's work was brilliant.
Thanks, PJ. I didn't want to hijack yours and Taz brought up the topic!
And I have to agree about The Sound of Music.

Despite the significant cuts made to the stage material, I'd say Cabaret.
West Side Story and Chicago are also high on my list.
The Sound of Music for me, all the way.
Oh yea, Grease definitely!
Also, 1776 is a classic.

A couple I don't see mentioned that I think are pretty successful are THE MUSIC MAN and KISS ME, KATE.

PG, as many times as I've seen it, your avi still creeps me out.
I totally agree with The Sound of Music...much better than the stage version.
I also agree that Kiss Me, Kate is a great movie.
When I think about it, though, the movie musicals I like best are those written directly for the screen.
Definitely KMK
Seeing it in 3 D is an added plus.It was filmed in 3D but generally released flat as it came at the end of the 3D craze.
