I'm living in a college dorm room right now feeling incredibly old, like there is no reason for me to still be in a college dorm. I can taste "grown-up" life. It's almost there. I'm willing to work hard and bust my ass to live every month.
How do I gain financial independence from my parents? How can I tell them, in the nicest way possible, to please stop giving me money? I cannot wait to graduate from this school so I can finally earn a living.

......I hate you. (types the poster who has a little over $200 to his name, and has outgrown asking his parents for money.)
get a job, or just spend the rest of what you have on the Powerball. I"m sure your number will eventually come up.

Posted: 9/6/08 at 11:01amWhat does graduating have to do with anything? Get a job, now! Tell your parents to stop sending you money. If they continue (for some inexplicable reason), don't cash the checks. Then you will be financially independent from your parents. You're in college and you couldn't figure out the answer to that question on your own?

Hey if you're looking to unload a few bucks I know where you can send.
Pa, do you just post this stuff to piss people off? At least you are not on the giving end, my parents have called ME for money.
Get a freaking job, it builds character.

"Whaaaa! My mommy and daddy keep giving me money! Whaaaa!"
WHAT?!
I'm sorry, but there's a lot of kids (by kids I mean just out of college) who WISH that their parents would/could help them out.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Get a job and make yourself independent, then just say "thanks, but no thanks."
But for the love of god don't complain because you have parents that are trying to help.

Posted: 9/6/08 at 9:34pmRemember this - it will help with the not accepting the money part - When you no longer take their money, then nothing in your life is really any of their business. No answering to them anymore - no need to ask permission for anything. As long as you are financially tied, I believe they will always feel they have the right to interfere in anything their money goes to support.

As someone who had to work his way through school getting no support what so ever from either of his parents: Stop the f*ing whining. Count yourself lucky that your parents are helping you. Use this time (and their support) to study hard and learn all you can. Get a small part time job for extra cash if you must.
or
Get yourself committed and become a ward of the State.
