BoCo = Boston Conservatory. Although it's really selective, it is much easier to get into than other Conservatories. For instance, Carnegie Melon or CCM take about...9 to 12 freshman MTs every year whereas BoCo takes more around 30-40. My friend got in 2 years ago in one of the larger classes they've had in a while, which I think was almost 50.

From what I've heard, CCM takes anywhere from 20-25 freshman MT's a year . . . I *believe* they took somewhere around 25 last year, and that there are somewhere around 20 in the program.

Does that mean 44% of the people who try out get in?

i literally JUST walked in the door from getting back from BoCo, and these numbers are direct from the admissions counselor i was with.

they audition around 500 MTs every year. They accept around 110. this means the acceptance rate is about 20%. of that 110, they IDEALLY want a class of 52 so they can divide it into 4 groups of 13 (usually they get about 55-60). this means the percentage of the people who audition who ACTUALLY GO TO BOCO is about 10%.

Sorry, I guess I was a bit off with my numbers. Though my friend is at Carnegie Melon and I do believe they accepted 12 last year. As for BoCo...Sporti, can you explain that a little more? I'm confused about the dividing into 4 groups and such. I know that they sort of...audition people at the end of the sophomore year and if you are not up to snuff or improving they can kick you out after 2 years. I didn't know anything else though, can you explain?

Boston Conservatory accpets a bunch of people and then cuts them in half. CCM and Carneige Mellon do not, nor do they waitlist or defer people. That's why it seems like BoCo accepts more than CCM and Carniege, but chances of graduating from all three schools just about equals out.

gumbo - the impression i got was that the 4 groups had NOTHING to do with talent - they simply want to break you down into more easily-managable numbers. it's not like a "group 1 and 2 will definitely move on" thing...i think it's just a "it's a lot easier to deal with 13 people at once than 52, so let's talk to group 1 now."

that said, i could be wrong. but the four groups seem to be just a management system, NOT part of their re-audition system.

did that make more sense?

Ok, I go to Boston Conservatory and the cut system works NOTHING like that! First of all BoCo dosent have a set number of people who they accept. If they like you your in, point black. My class has 54 people in it, last year they accepted 43. Its never the same. Also the cut system isnt a cut system. Its a PROMOTIONAL system. What happens is the end of your first semster of your sophmore year you sing 2 songs and do a scene that you have worked on in class for the falculty and if they dont see your improvement you are on probation for acting or singing. If you do your work you will get promoted. Most people who arent cut out for the program end up leaving BEFORE promotionals! They dont kick people out.

Stop worrying if your vision is new. Let others make that decision- They usually do. You keep moving on. Anything you do, Let it come from you. Then it will be new. Give us more to see... ~Sunday In the Park with George
