I know a woman who used to be my teacher's aide (I have Asperger's Syndrome). Quite frankly, she annoyed the hell out of me because she basically lives in her own little la la land. She's like in her late sixties or something. I call her "The Old Raisin" like in Whoopi's first show on Broadway back in '84.
So, even though she's no longer my aide, through the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, she's helping the teacher in my learning skills class. So some guys are getting into an argument with this really ignorant girl (She thought there was still black slavery in the 1940s). She thought Aretha Franklin originally recorded Georgia On My Mind. She might've done a cover, I'm not sure. So everyone's like, "It was Ray Charles." And The Old Raisin, who is old enough to have been around when Georgia on My Mind first hit the charts, says, "Ray Charles didn't record Georgia On My Mind." I say, "Yes he did!" Then some dude says that the reason the movie Ray was made because of Ray Charles' death. And then The Old Raisin says, "Ray Charles isn't dead." And I say, "He's been dead since 2004." And she says, "Oh, I'm so out of date." And at the same time I'm thinking, "You're also incredibly stupid."
Whaddya think of that?
I think, what was the point of this thread? So what if she hadn't known he'd croaked? Also, it may be perceived as ageist to refer to an elderly person as "Old Raisin." Just sayin'...

I think the particulars of the Syndrome you claim to have would adequately explain your post, which is probably best left alone without comment.
wow.
I could barely get through that
I think you'd get along great with this guy:

So, I think everyone has a little ignorance in them (to a point). Doesn't make them stupid as you put it.

I skimmed over.
I got the teacher's aide part, the Asperger's Syndrome, the "old raisin" comment and something about Ray Charles not being dead.
I don't call that ignorant, her not knowing. I call that not paying attention to world news.
There's a difference.

By the way, Ray Charles was alive when the movie was being made.
This is a total threadjack, but I was actually bored with Ray.
It's one of the very few movies I haven't finished.
Napoleon Dynamite is on the list, too.
I'm not that far away from the "raisin's" age. You sound a little ignorant, and that doesn't necessarily co-relate to Asberger's. My friend's son with it is far above normal intelligence. I think you just need to have a little compassion. Getting a few facts about music history wrong does not by any means indicate an ignorant person. In fact who the hell cares about that. I don't remember things I did yesterday. If you call me ignorant for that, I'll slug you one.

While I do not agree at all with the characterization of the "old raisin" as being ignorant - nor with her being called an "old raisin," for that matter - I must admit that insisting that Ray Charles didn't record "Georgia On My Mind" when it was truly his most famous, signature song is a bit...odd.
There are some people who are more knowledgeable about popular music than others. I'm sure there are some facts the raisin can quote that you or I don't know.

Jane2: I'm sure! It's just that Mattbrain claims she specifically said, "Ray Charles didn't record 'Georgia On My Mind.'" That's different than just not knowing something.

Jane2: And I do NOT think that it makes her ignorant. I was just saying I could see why someone might be suprised by someone saying something like that. That's like saying, "The Beatles didn't record 'Help!'"
And DG, thanks for the link!
Edited for typos.

That was pretty sad she thought slavery existed in the 1940's. Anyway, who cares she didn't know much about music.

But so what? really. I guess I don't consider those kinds of facts to be as important for someone to know than you and Mattbrain do.
Brava, Jane! I was just gonna say, "Who cares?"
Well thanks, SM2! and this coming from a young person-bravo to you!

I don't think you guys are getting my point. I wasn't saying that these are important facts to know. Who cares, indeed. I was just saying, to my mind, it is rather annoying when someone states "knowledge" of a fact that is just plain wrong. I.e., "Ray Charles didn't record 'Georgia On My Mind.'" Saying, "I don't think he recorded that song. Or "Huh? Are you sure? I thought it was Aretha Franklin." wouldn't bother me in the least. Just don't tell people a "fact" when you're wrong.
Whatever. I'm off to work...

Ok, folks, let's get a few things straight:
I knew that Ray Charles was alive when Ray was made.
A student thought there was still slavery in the 40s, not the Old Raisin.
And it's spelled A-S-P-E-R-G-E-R. No B.

And this is also a woman who sat in on almost all of my History classes. And, frankly, my history teacher was a cruel, heartless woman. She would say things to us that were one step short of verbal abuse. And The Old Raisin would be there for every class and she would either say, "I wasn't paying attention" or "I didn't notice." Or she would just wave it off like I was making it up. This is a woman who needs to take the clouds from her eyes and see the world as it is.
