But the former Arkansas governor beat his Massachusetts counterpart after delegates for John McCain defected to his side.

These McCain delegates were directed to do so. In effect, McCain "threw" the election so that Romney wouldn't win on the 2nd or 3rd ballot.

Romney's side is already scowling about "dirty tricks."
