Wow. I was in St. Petersburg back in 2000. They were just beginning to come out of their "crime lord" era after the fall of the Soviet Union. Those crime lords (mafia types) went legit, because they could make as much money in the new economy legally as they could illegally in the old.
It was a fascinating city. Decaying decadence. You could see what it once was. There were companies going around restoring everything. They were finally able to put crosses back on the Christian churches, since the ban to practice the religion openly had been removed.
The people were hesitant to look tourists in the eye, but when they did, there was a sense of hope. An eagerness to embrace a new life. Fear mixed with joy.
It's sad to hear that things aren't moving forward anymore. It's 13 years since I was there ... and this is a giant step backwards for their country.
I'm glad I went. I won't be going again soon, certainly not as long as this law is in place.
Well, there goes all the male figure skaters. I hope bail money is part of the package the Olympics Committees give them.

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes and YES to whoever that is in your new pic Jordan.
That's the amazing actress Tilda Swinton, who played the White Witch in the first and second (a cameo) Chronicles of Narnia movie.
She's stunning.
Here's an upside? Maybe lots of hate-filled Americans will move to Russia?
On a serious note, this is incredibly frightening for so many.
@Red
Tilda also made a small cameo in the 3rd Narnia film. Just an FYI.
Tilda is also an Oscar-winner.
