I Hate Being Legally Blind! (I Blame Reese Witherspoon!)

Posted: 4/3/06 at 2:24pmBelieve me. As someone who has been in glasses their whole life, faced constant scrutiny for having thick glasses even as an adult, and have been in several situations where I couldn't see and had to assist myself, I would never treat anyone who is blind or close to blind with disrespect.

Yeah being legally blind sucks.
Especially when you are completely blind in one eye and it really can never be fixed because a doctor screwed up.
Then for four months become completely blind in the other, while trying to finish college applications and actually graduate. Oh and then you get a surgery that has never been done before
And you had to have contacts at age 8 because glasses do not help at all. After you got glasses for the first time (age 4) you said "oh wow so those green blobs on the side of the road are TREES"
And your retina has a good chance of detaching before you are 40.
So yes, it would be great to live one or two days not legally blind
Not that I am bitter at all. Just needed a second to vent

Cait, I'm now bitter on your behalf.

lol
I actually am not at all. Some days I just wish I could experience a couple days being able to see like normal people.
I wish...

Caitie, did Into the Woods teach you nothing about the dangers of wishing?
I better go make sure a giant doesn't try to destroy the Off-Topic board...

Posted: 4/3/06 at 2:46pmI would kill to have 1 day without glasses. Alas. I'm training myself to walk around without my glasses. I actually like it. Makes it easier to ignore my co-workers.

Posted: 4/3/06 at 2:49pmI'm legally blind... I was once on vacation and lost my glasses and I had to spend my whole vacation in constant blurryness. It was awful.

Mel it went really well. I am down to like 37 stitches.
I found that it is kinda easy after a while to figure out where you are even when you can barely see.
hmm and I guess I take that wish back.

Posted: 4/3/06 at 2:54pmYeah, it's quite easy to negotiate shapes and dimension for me, so I can survive without the glasses while I'm walking. Driving, I'd crash in an instant.

Good to hear, Caitie
.
Bad eye sight runs in my family. I'm pretty good with reading when I don't have my glasses on, although the glasses definitely make it a lot better. I like to try and figure out who people are from far away. It makes the 'not being able to see thing' a little bit fun.

Posted: 4/3/06 at 3:42pmEven with corrective lenses the best my vision gets is 20/60... good enough to drive (barely) but not at night. It's frustrating, but I also realize that it could've been much worse.

YES! I mean having to have someone else read you a menu is not fun at all. At least they could have a semi bright lamp that people could turn on if they needed to!
I mean I know the dimly lit is supposed to "set a mood" but it def takes away from any mood if you cannot see.
My other thing is when they have computers set up somewhere, but they have it situated so you have to be a good foot foot and 1/2 away. Some of us need to be a little closer to see anything even if things are as big as they can get!

(I love BWW.)
I'm legally blind, too. And I laughed out loud, shameless, because I also noticed the individual leaves on the trees when I first got glasses. Man, those things were huge. I had that one pair for five frickin' years and I'm slightly bitter that no one told me I looked like Harry Potter. But, I got contacts at 13 and have been happily ever after since. I hardly ever wear glasses. And quick question for contact wearers: When you put your glasses on, do you get a little nauseous? It's hard to explain. I think it's because my peripheral vision is blurry when I have glasses on and I can't focus well.
I *insert word that is equivalent to wish* that I could go one day without them. It would be nice.

Posted: 4/3/06 at 4:34pmI don't get nauseous, but I do feel slightly dizzy when I first put them on and then start to walk down my staircase. And, sometimes when I first put them on, the floor looks slanted.

"It sure seems a lot of us didn't eat our carrots."
I never really did eat my carrots. *wonders*
One of my favorite things to do with my glasses is dip them a little so I can see how things look without them on, and then put them on so I can see how things look with them on.
