Not even if he's bothering you? I understand you say he's a "nice enough man," but after reading the rest of your post...I don't know about that. Just give him a quick nod of acknowledgement when you exit your building if he's not bothering you. If your dog is small enough, carry him. If not, keep a strong hold on the leash. You don't owe this man an explanation as to why he cannot pet your dog. If he starts harassing you, call the cops.

And thanks everyone (mostly) for the advice. The day after I posted this, he was gone again and I haven seen him since. I'm sure he'll be back and when he is, I'll be sure to just follow the advice given here. :)

Our dog is a registered therapy dog, so I mention this sincerely, Jordan. Just connecting with the dog for a few seconds might really make a positive difference in the guy's life. We threw the therapy dog vest on our girl when Copley Square was reopened after the bombings this Spring. We just hung out with her and let people cuddle with her at the Copley Square memorial. Later we moved down to the Finish Line and there were some musicians playing there and a crowd. I got distracted by that, and didn't notice a woman who had crouched down to pet our dog. When she stood up, she had a tear on her cheek. I noticed then that she was wearing her running clothes and her Marathon number. It was a profound interaction between human and beast that I almost completely missed.

I'm just saying you never know how you might be helping somebody a little.

Namo, I totally understand that and it's actually one of the reasons I never really stop him from petting and kissing the dog. My problem with that really has become the man is getting dirtier and dirtier, has a beard that's now always for food and whatever all over it and it all gets on my dog, which means the 4-5 times a day we go out, I need to prettying give him a bath when we get back home. And that's a real problem.

Namo, that was my first thought when this thread started, but I didn't want to sound preachy by mentioning it. With your personal experience, you said it better than I could.

Jordan, I COMPLETELY understand your reaction to the situation, and I honestly hope he's just moved on. But in the meanwhile, I do think it very likely that you and your dog meant something to this guy.

Let me say again, this man is extremely nice. I've talked with him for quite a long time about everything from politics to his situation. It's nothing about him that's my issue, other than the fact that he (and obviously he's not intending to it) is just getting my dog filthy.

I'm very picky about who I let my dog lick. I really debated on whether or not to let him lick Growl, but decided in the end that he was clean enough.
