I actually just started season 1 a week ago. I am enjoying it (and was surprised at the quality of the acting, for the most part), but I can't imagine having the patience to see it all the way through--especially after reading some of the discouraging comments from those who've watched later seasons.
Oh well, we'll see . . .

The Godfather is a book? Hmm, I learn something new everyday.
Also, am I the only one that doesn't "get" The Office? I've tried on many occasions to watch it, but I never laugh.
Marianne2, I've never read any of the Harry Potter books either. My brother actually bought the second one just to follow the bandwagon and it was a waste of money because he never read it. I tried reading it and couldn't get past page 42. As for the movies, I've only seen 1, 2, 6.

I haven't read Potter either. I just can't bring myself to devote the time to teen literature.

Posted: 7/27/09 at 2:04pmI just remembered a really funny story now from a couple of weeks ago. It has to do with books. Some girl behind me on a checkout line at some store was carrying on to her friend how she didn't want to read the Twilight book series because she wasn't interested. However, she said she was going to anyway because in 20 years or so, people will be having intellectual conversations about them, and she doesn't want to be left out.

Posted: 7/27/09 at 2:11pmI'm kind of into Burn Notice right now... Where that puts me, I have no idea.

Posted: 7/27/09 at 2:13pmI think Harry Potter is my greatest concession to mainstream popular culture. And I have no regrets.

I used to like Lost, but like Weez, gave up after 2.5 seasons. In fact, Lost is the first (and so far only) TV show I ever bought a DVD set of. Ugh!
I never got into LotR either, but unlike Cruel_Sandwich, it didn't give me a complex.

The only TV shows I buy boxsets of nowadays are House (the formulaic nature of the show has yet to repel me, and even if it ever does, I can always give 'em to my mother) and shows that have finished and thus have no opportunity to turn rubbish (so The Adventures of Brisco County and Oz then, although I fully intend buying Life on Mars and The Wire if I ever get a decently-waged job).
I say there's nothing wrong with reading teen literature! So many "adult" writers are so encumbered with the idea of realism that they've forgotten how to tell stories, and you'd be hard-pressed to find as many "adult" fantasy writers (NO NOT PORN) who are as brilliantly creative as teen fantasy writers. Sarah Dessen has the depth and brilliance of fifty "adult" chick-lit writers rolled into one, and Anthony Horowitz is nothing if not one of the nicest men I've met. Just because they're writing for kids doesn't mean they're not good writers; Charlie Higson can out-thrill Dan Brown any day of the week, and many authors who crossover between "adult" fiction and teen fiction produce their finer works when aiming at the younger crowd (Gaiman's American Gods may not be universally loved, but I've yet to encounter anyone who isn't totally enamoured of The Graveyard Book).
Plus, y'know, if I've got a couple of hours free and want a complete story, it's much easier and more satisfying to whizz through a Sophie McKenzie than battle with a Michael Crichton.
Whoops, went off on my "kids lit > adult lit" rant again. Sorry...
