"[D]o you appreciate the irony in that though, namo? here are the republicans, the bastions of small government and no safety nets being the folks who trust government to do what's best."
Actually, what I appreciate, Pap, is the fact that YOU see the irony there. Most repubs disconnect and glaze over before that thought enters that consciousness. Which is why you're different. Which is why I'll by the RootBeer Lipsmackers if you bring a vanilla ice cream cone and we can make it a RootBeer Float.

why thank you for noticing that, as usual, i'm just contrarian enough to not quite fit nicely even into my own political party.
root beer floats are tasty!

idealogical leather bar, huh?
i too am a bit dismissive of straws as i like the way the foam catches in my moustache so i have to lick it clean...that and i sometimes like to gulp things down.

Posted: 12/19/03 at 4:13pmI have Guinness more often, but I seem to enjoy Murphy's a little bit more on those rare occasions that I find a bar that has it on tap. Faster pour, too, so I don't have to wait a whole 90 seconds like I do for Guinness. A shot of Jameson's makes for a good side order.

Hey! I want to be invited to this party!
Papa...I agree the Dems are a tad split at the moment. But isn't that how it always is during primarys? I think once a candidate is picked the party will rally behind him. (Oh and just for the record, I am NOT a democrat). I hope once a candidate is picked they will really start going after Bush, I think they are being too easy on him so far.
And another thing for Mr. Roxy. You once accused me of being unreasonable and thinking of Bush as Hitler (which I never said) but I see you have no problem throwing out a Hitler reference towards Dean. Talk about labeling!
Oh and just in time for the holidays I heard on 1010 wins today the government is spewing out their threats of impending terror attacks. So we can all stay trembling in fear...but don't forget to go Christmas shopping!

Maybe this explains Bush's foreign policy.
"Redefining the role of the United States from enablers to keep the peace to enablers to keep the peace from peacekeepers is going to be an assignment."
—Interview with the New York Times, Jan. 14, 2001

#112Bush lies (surprise) about using force in Iraq
Posted: 12/21/03 at 9:07am
In a press conference on Tuesday Bush said "I'm reluctant to use military power. It's the last choice, it's not our first choice." In direct contradiction to what Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said in a May 2003 interview. According to Paul ""the disagreement [in the weekend after 9/11] was whether [invading Iraq] should be in the immediate response or whether you should concentrate simply on Afghanistan first." Even though tricky Dick (Cheney) admitted the weekend after 9/11 that there was no evidence that Iraq had anything to do with the attacks.
So although Bush claims that using force was a last resort we had to use since we were under immediate threat from Iraq, it is clear he had his mind made up the weekend after 9/11. It was his chance to use this event to use pre-emptive force in Iraq. If you want to read more about this, including finding sources for the above quotes, click on the link below.

If you think it's important to know what other people think, perhaps you should MOVE to wherever it is they live if you don't like it here so much.
Having said that, I would emigrate to the province of Quebec if they would have me. But get this, they don't want me! ME! AN AMERICAN! I get to go and do whatever I want! How dare they?

Just in time for the Holidays Tom Ridge raised the terror alert. But PLEASE DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU FROM SHOPPING! As Mr. Ridge said "be vigilant but enjoy the spirit of the season!"

Posted: 12/21/03 at 7:52pmReally a joking matter. It was a barrel of laughs in NYC 9/11/01. I lived through it & I can tell you we New Yorkers are still laughing. Lets get rid of the Patriot act, open our borders to everyone & not check you in airports. Lets all start smoking what some of you in this post must be inhaling now. Not Bubba of course as he didn't inhale

As opposed to the white Peruvian flake that went up Bush's nose? Oh, that's right, he made his peace with God, and his wife, decided his addictions were off limits for discussion, and this is all somehow morally superior to saying you didn't inhale! Sniff. Sniff. Am I showing?
And, yeah, you're the ONLY person who lived through 9/11 in NYC, Roxy. We all cede to your moral highground as the only person who did. Just so you know, it's been okay to laugh since Giuliani said it was on the first post-9/11 Saturday Night Live. Sorry if that doesn't fit in with your world view.
BTW, if you don't think ready.gov is a lesson in patheticness, you ain't payin attention.

Posted: 12/21/03 at 8:36pmman, i know they mean well, but these things are frightneningly similar to the "duck and cover" movies from the 50's. i'm fairly certain that the only useful part of those early theories was the duck part as it got your face closer to the point at which you could kiss your ass goodbye.

If you don't take ready.gov seriously pap, Roxy will accuse you of not having respect for what happened to him on 9/11.

ErikJ, here's hoping someone gives you a one-way ticket out of the U.S.A. as a holiday gift, or for your birthday. You appear to be be very unhappy living here.
Perhaps if you try someplace else you'll realize you belong there, or conversely, that freely expressing your opinion in the U.S.A. is a privilege one shouldn't take for granted.

Oh please. Here comes the "love it or leave it" crew. Why is it that the same people who tell you you should be happy you have the freedom to criticize the country of your birth tell you that maybe you should move away if you actually do it? Doesn't that strike you as a titch contradictory, Bulldog. To quote Belize, "I don't have to love America. I live here."
Any REAL Democracy can withstand criticism from within.

y'know, as with anything in this universe, you're going to have your ying and your yang. part of nature is balance and erik is as entitled to his opinion, as repugnant as some might find it, as i am to mine, as repugnant as others may find it. that's the beauty of america is that we can have these differing opinions. i for one think it's very important to have people like erik who will constantly push for what they believe in. i don't agree with him very often, but through his agitation dialogues form. people take positions on either side and do so not just because of what they've always thought, but because the think about the issues that form those discussions.
heck, i'm a dyed in the wool republican and i check out almost all of erik's sites and read his vitriol (don't take it the wrong way, erik). why? because it's important to know what other people think. because it's imperative in a democracy to recognize that there are many points of view. while you may not accept the merits of all of those points of view, to argue that they have no right to them? that's not democracy.
erik's just stating his view of the world. i don't agree with it, but i think it's important to have that. now i have to admit that sometimes the talk stretches my limits of credulity, but so freakin' what. when we start teling people what is acceptable for them to say about their government, we're walking a slippery slope at best, and i don't think any of you are brian boitano. geez, it's just words.
i remember a quote from john wayne. he was asked what he thought of the war protesters outside the studio where he was being interviewed. he said, "well, i disagree with damn near everything they say, but it sure is nice to see young people that interested in their government, isn't it?" a well informed public makes good decisions. the more you hear, the more you know and the better informed you are.

Ahh Bulldog. I should have known it would be you who would bring up the old "move to another country arguement". One of the weakest arguements of the bunch. I could be wrong, but wasn't this country founded out of dissent? Maybe our founders should have shut their mouths about the whole taxation without representation thing.
As for "hyperventaling" I can assure I'm not. I'm quite happy here thanks. And I assume since there are over 1400 views to this thread so far, many others are happy reading it. In fact, many of the nifty links I've provided were provided by other board members via PM.
However I sure would like a plane ticket to somewhere warm for vacation...maybe around February.
Papalovesmambo...thanks for providing more great posts. I do have a great passion for these issues and I think EVERYONE should. That's why we live in a democracy. People should be passionate about the things that are important and they should debate them.
So I can assure you this will probably go on throughout the upcoming election year. With luck it will become even more heated. And if Bush wins again, trust me, I'll be able to live with it.
And I can assure Bulldog, I don't take a word that's said on here personally and I'm as happy as a clam. Hope you are too. Heck..I would even send you a Christmas Card if I had your address.
And hey...don't forget...I even posted one GOOD thing I thought Bush did!
