I give him marks for verbalising his love - not once, but twice.
If someone insists on defaulting to their chosen mythology above all else, there really isn't anything to be said to them.

The "redefining" arguments is BS- marriage has been redefined over and over and over again- Polygamy used to be marriage, for just one example. Gay people have always formed loving bonds- the question is whether society will finally acknowledge them.
And good job breaking the news! With gas and homosexuals better out than in.

I agree: I'm very happy that he chose to express his love for you.
My bf's parents were (are?) very conservative Christians, and they had a very difficult time with his being gay. As a result, he pulled farther and farther away from them, seeing them only at holidays, and for as brief a time as possible.
Eventually, their love for their son triumphed: I was FINALLY introduced to them. We had lunch, it was easy and pleasant, and I'm invited to Thanksgiving this year.
This is a great opportunity for your uncle to learn and grow. I'm hopeful that will happen.

I'm actually surprised that he seems to be taking it well, and didn't give me the whole "Hellfire and Damnation" speech, but of course he will keep thinking the way he thinks..(he's a pastor, as if you couldn't guess) and I can't change that, but my hope is this leads to him opening up his mind just a little bit more, and be more accepting and less judgemental.
One step at a time.
Reg, that is a beautiful story and I hope that I can bring my bf around my father's side of the family in the near future.

Pippin, unless you're the only heir in this uncle's will
why does his approval really matter? Enjoy and live YOUR life.

Way to go Pippin!
He will always love you which is great. Minds can change over time...hearts cannot.

Posted: 11/2/11 at 3:16pmYes, he is wrong. Marriage has been redefined any number of ways in various times and cultures, from polygamy to family- and state-sanctioned rape to women actually having a say in the matter.

I'm invited to Thanksgiving this year.
That sentence has such a sweet sound.

Pippin - adding my voice to the chorus of those congratulating you on your honesty and being open and out. I'm also heartened to know that your Uncle didn't reject you, and that he expressed his love for you so openly and honestly.
It sounds like his beliefs are deeply held and 'carefully taught', but there is hope in the support you received. Well done. I hope this feels like a really positive step for you.
Reg, I beamed broadly at your sentence about being invited to Thanksgiving this year. Thanks for the smile...
Love this thread.

Posted: 11/15/11 at 12:43pmThe best revenge? Living well. You are well on your way, wherever you spend Turkey Day. You are born into a family, and you make a family too...regardless of any blood relation. Some members can be in both of your families, and some cannot. Human nature. Your good nature has stood you through. Reason enough to give thanks.

The thing that stood out for me was that he only agreed to the right to own a gun.
Congrats Pippin. I know it is a hard thing to do, especially when it is with family. It breaks my heart also that you have to endure the slurs when with them and can't be with your partner. Maybe that is the next step...

Why do you have to be with your family every year? You CHOOSE to be with them. Family are those who love and support you.....these people obviously do not. Most of us have made our own families with loving and supporting friends.
I'd suggest looking at why you feel the need to spend time with haters. Sharing the same genes is not enough of a reason.
