I'm a Gleek, but I think Glee has earned an I Dont Watch Glee thread.

I've been saying this since the pilot aired. Not funny, not smart, just another detached screenwriter's idea of what the "real high school experience" is like. The characters are all tired archetypes (the bitchy cheerleader? The gay kid? The dumb jock who just wants to be good? Yawn.) and Rachel deserves a good smack in the face.
Also, I don't think the music is anything special either.

Why does everyone need to develop a stance on this one show? I don't think anyone felt compelled to issue a statement about if they'd be viewing the new Kelsey Grammer show.

Posted: 10/1/09 at 12:03pmI am glad Namo created this thread. There needs to be a home for those of us who inhabit this strange, surreal universe that is "not liking Glee." I mean, I live for musical theatre, so how can I reject a show that has Lea Michelle, Matt Morrison, where showtunes are sung and Broadway guest stars will be in abundance? It still makes me question my identity on a weekly basis when I have no desire to turn on Fox. It boggles my mind.

You ain't missin' much, Namo. The show is a very uncomfortable mix of satire (stereotypical characters that the audience condescends to) and afterschool-special earnestness (the same stereotypical characters getting all emotional so the audience is supposed to empathize with them all of a sudden??).
It's a high school show made by people who seem to have never gone to high school themselves.

They lost me last night, about 45 minutes in. It is just too long, and overly polished.
It's obvious they are not singing live at all. You NEVER hear them sing a wrong note.
The guy with the mohawk is hot, ya all, but WAY too old to be in any high school. And I agree that Lea Michele should be slapped. He character went from slighty obnoixious to a total "C U Next Tuesday" last night.
I really wanted to like it, but it's just too forced.

"The show just tries too hard. It would be easier to like if there was some sort of consistancy in the little world it is desperately trying to create. "
Agreed. I loved last week's episode, but last night was a mess and practically an infomercial for iTunes (not to mention hardly any Jane Lynch). I keep hoping it finds it's groove.
I also think their performances should be more like an actual show choir and less American Idol Results show opening number.

Posted: 10/1/09 at 1:08pmThe logic of allowing a 40 year old non-high school student to join the Glee club OF A HIGH SCHOOL is lost to me.

Posted: 10/1/09 at 1:08pmIt amazes me how many theatre people, who don't like the show, which of course they're entitled to, continue to watch it. It seems some masochistic weekly delight. If ya don't like it, don't watch it!

Posted: 10/1/09 at 1:12pmSome of us know that some great shows start off wobbly. Trust me--if it doesn't get better, I will indeed remove it from my DVR. Same reason I'm giving Cougar Town one last chance next week.

There is no logic in this show.

It's a heightened reality. You're going to pull out a lot of hair trying to approach the show from a realistic mindset.
What do you guys think of Nip/Tuck? While subject is different the tone/world is very similar.

How 'bout them Desperate Housewives?
Talk about meandering plots, stereotypes and redundant "twists".

Oh I wasn't saying I don't like the show. There are aspects of it that I love. Just that it made no sense to have an adult join a HS Glee Club.
I've never seen Nip/Tuck.

Posted: 10/1/09 at 1:28pmWell she did have 3 credits left to finish High School so I guess theoretically if she returned to finish those credits she'd be eligible to participate in all school programs.

Posted: 10/1/09 at 1:28pmExcept it's an attempt at a heightened reality that doesn't quite work. I understand they are trying to create their own world, but so far it's been inconsistent, at best. It doesn't make sense within the world it's trying to create.

But was she re-enrolled in the school? And if the whole point of her being there was to get them to regionals, wouldn't they have been disqualified with her there?

What are the inconsistencies you see Phyllis? I think they've been pretty good about staying true to their world.
Yep she was Stockard. They showed her in Spanish class. Though I do agree, if she had so few credits (and does High School even use a credit system?) how would she have lasted until regionals? I agree with you there, that needed to be further explained.

Posted: 10/1/09 at 1:36pmOr why did Lil Idina quit the group the join the movie version of Cabaret onstage when she wasn't getting the star solos, and then come back to do the star solo and everyone acted like it was so big and magnanimous of her when she just got exactly what she wanted? And quit the play.

Well they trapped her into the school play. She was annoyed with Tina getting her West Side Story solo ("Nalie Wood was a jew, you know?). They knew she was pissed off about losing her solos twice in a row to Quinn and Tina so they bribed her with 4 words "LIZA MINNELI CELINE DION". I agree that they sort of slapped their lesson in the face by her wanting to be part of the team but getting to be the star too. I understand that critique.
As for he "movie version of Cabaret" I've seen so many amateur productions put "Maybe This Time" into their production. Is it legal, no? But High Schools are notorious for violating these rights laws.

Yeah, I thought was weird. Natalie would WASN'T a jew.
It wasn't "Maybe this Time" that made it the movie version. It was the dialogue from the movie that made it the movie version.
