I must say that it was really a piece of ****! Okay...that may be a bit harsh, but if not for wanting to see Sandra Bullock's Oscar-Winning Performance I would have turned it off!
Clearly it was something you might find on The Hallmark Channel...except the Producers and team were smart and made it into a movie and made some $$$.
But it was still Blah...the worst part for me being when Kathy Bates was telling "Big Mike" about the bodies that come up from the football field at the University of Tennesse.
As for Sandra Bullock...I am a fan of hers but that was not Oscar-Worthy...I don't even think it was nomination worthy! Clearly, a "career" oscar...even though she isn't OLD that most actors are when they get them.
But I would have to call it the WORST Best Actress EVER. Worse than Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball"...Worse than Katherine Hepburn in "Guess Who's Coming for Dinner" and Worse than Elizabeth Taylor in "Butterfield 8". I actually thought she was deserving for "Butterfield 8"...but I put that one in because it always makes the top of the list!
Maybe it helped that her fellow actors were bland (or maybe that was just their dialogue)...I am refering to Tim McGraw and Quinton Aaron...who literally just seemed like they found a big black man (who looks like he is 30-something) and showed him his lines on cue cards!

"But it was still Blah...the worst part for me being when Kathy Bates with telling "Big Mike" about the bodies that come up from the football field at the University of Tennesse."
That should be on the cover of the Blu-Ray. Because it's one of the best descriptions of this crap movie that I've read.
I wanted to puke at that point..."Big Mike" looking like he is scared that zombies are going to come up or something!
Adriane Lenox was the only thing that caught my attention.
I enjoyed it, but probably because it was precisely what I expected. And if that family is half as cool as they are portrayed in the film, then I'm glad the story was told and achieved success. Did Bullock give a good performance? I think so. Would I have given her the Oscar this year? Probably not, but I assume that's why the Academy has never asked for my vote. It's all about being the right celebrity in the right role at the right time, not about being the best.
I put in in my Netflix queue to possibly have this week but it is not available on Netflix until late next month. I just want to see her performance also.
It was just so hard to stomach.
But for Sandra Bullock to win for THAT performance...I mean there have been some like Reese Witherspoon in "Walk the Line" where you kinda are like "okay there could have been a better win, but this isn't so bad".
I guess it was just the RIGHT year for Sandra...two veterans with wins (one of them recent) and two newcomers (even though one really isn't new).
I enjoyed the movie, but I did see where people would be offended and call it racist. I mean, if it's the way it happened then that's the way it happened, but there wasn't a single positive black influence in that kid's life. If they were black, they were a crackhead, a drug dealer, lived in the projects or they were accusing all the nice white folks of taking advantage of a poor ignorant black kid.
uncageg...the "best" parts of her performance are exactly what you see in all the previews! You'll see when you watch it!
I have only seen one performance (Gabby Sidibe's). Just from the trailers, I found Gabby's to be better. But I decided to see all of the performances. I was hoping that there was something more to Bullock's performance than what I saw in the promos. I am seeing Julie & Julia next.
I agree completely with what Mister Matt said. When Sandra won a few weeks back, it was similar to when Julia Roberts won for "Erin B." Had it been another year, another time, they each probably won't have won. Remember when Julia won, and she even said that this would be the only time that she'll ever up be up on the stage to win an Oscar. Same with Reese Witherspoon in "Walk The Line." Felicity Huffman was the favorite to win that year.
"Entertainment Weekly" a few weeks ago, ran a story about the real Big Mike and his story. It was very, very different from what was ultimately portrayed on film. This film is BASED on a true story.
I personally wanted Meryl Streep to win for "Julie & Julia."
I enjoyed the film but didn't think it deserved all the praise and hooplah, neither did Sandra's performance. Still liked it tho.
"but there wasn't a single positive black influence in that kid's life."
That's not true. There was Big TOny, that guy at the very beginning whose son was going to attend the school and he brought Mike with him. Mike had been staying with him until his wife started complaining. He can also be seen toward the end when Mike graduates.

I'm glad she won just so she could give that great speech.
I enjoyed it. But I saw it the day it came out with 0 expectations. I am glad she won.
That's not true. There was Big TOny
The only thing he did for the kid was strike a deal so he could go to school. They never even touched on him giving a damn if the kid was homeless or not. I wouldn't call him a positive influence. At most, he was neutral. Leaving him homeless cancels out getting him into the good school where he was barely keeping his head above water.

Q, have you watched Gabby Sidibe's publicity appearances? I guarantee you her speech would have been brilliant.

Plum - yes, I have, and I have NO DOUBT!
And, I don't think it was accidental that the very first thing Sandra did after her little joke (which was obviously necessary) was to turn to Gabby and say, "You amaze me!"
I think Gabby amazed everybody.
The kid is on SVU tonight. He's really not a very good actor.
I'd just like to say that Julia Roberts win for Erin Brockevich was totally deserved. Go back and watch that film again and you'll see some damn fine acting on her part. That was a really tough year though and there were three women who could have won and I would have been happy. Either Roberts or Ellen Burstyn for REQUIEM FOR A DREAM or a very not well known Laura Linney for YOU CAN COUNT ON ME.
"The kid is on SVU tonight. He's really not a very good actor."
I was just coming here to ask if that was him on SVU....
Sorry but you cannot compare Sandra Bullock's win to Julia Roberts'. Like it or not, Julia Roberts gave what is called a bonafide star turn in ERIN BROCKOVICH, it's the kind of performance that star turns were made for and she just proved that she was the ultimate star of her time. It's an incredible performance by a star, no, she does not "lose herself in the role," instead she uses every single aspect of her very well known persona (the charming smile, the sex appeal, the charisma) and used it to a complete different effect. She kills in this role not to mention the fact that she had a hugely entertaining screenplay to work with and great support from Albert Finney.
Sandra Bullock won because this was a weak year for lead actresses and she was in two incredibly successful movies. She singlehandedly turned THE PROPOSAL and THE BLIND SIDE into hits, she is incredibly well-liked and people felt that Meryl Streep has been rewarded too much, so they gave her an Oscar. No one can say that that was the best performance of the year or that it was even a performance that will be remembered as one of the best, very similar to Reese Witherspoon's victory. It's not her fault, it's just that the role was so one-dimensional that there was nothing in that movie for her to show any sort of complex acting.
I could not agree more with the original poster. This is easily one of the worst movies I have seen not to mention the fact that its treatment of race is incredibly problematic. All the black people in it are either animals (like Ohre himself who literally remains silent and savage-like for most of the movie), drug addicts, thugs, and crack whores. Of course as long as a Republican Christian white woman takes you in, you are completely saved from that. Ugh.
The acting from the ensemble is disastrous. The guy who plays Ohre is good when he doesn't talk...then he opens his mouth. He was clearly cast simply because he is huge. Kathy Bates' character was so absurd, "I'm a Democrat," what a tacky line, what a tacky role.
The script is full of the most cliched, corny, problematic, terrible lines (They actually use the onion metaphor at face value!). The direction is incredibly sloppy. I found absolutely no value in this movie. People enjoyed it because it's so easy to watch, it offers you no challenges, it offers absolutely nothing new. It's a lot easier to watch this than UP IN THE AIR, PRECIOUS, and THE HURT LOCKER.
I am in the minority here when I say that I love The Blind Side. Was Bullock giving a performance worthy of an Osacar? That is something that is debatable.
However, I feel that the movie didn't do anything negative as far as race was concerned. I felt that the character of Michael was one that generally just kept to himself and was just someone who was quite. And, as far as the other people who lived in the same building project as him. They were all people he knew from his mother and she couldn't take care of him anymore due to the fact that she became addicted to drugs. So, I don't see them mistreating any of the black characters in the show to make them look bad.

I just saw The Blind Side a couple of weeks ago and it was good for what it was. Without the hype, I probably wouldn't have seen it because it's not the kind of movie I would go see. As for Sandra Bullock, I think she deserved the Oscar. Honestly, it was between her and Gabby.
He looks so much older in the SVU episode.
