This may be the worst Oscars ever. Crystal is coming across as old and dated and trying too hard. All the filmed segments are falling flat; even Christopher Guest and friends have misssed the mark. And now Cirque Du Soleil?
I also know it's early but I think Christopher Plummer just walked away with the whole Awards show.
I hate to say it but I agree. I LOVE Billy Crytal but the writting is weak and it's just not working for some reason. Then again, it would have been a lot worse if Brett Ratner was producing and Eddie Murphy was hosting.
I am pleased to see HUGO winning. I was certain THE ARTIST would win EVERYTHING.
Question. Is this a new theater? Looks smaller. I love the Art Deco stage
I could only find a few highlights in the show: the writers of The Descendants mocking Angelina's posing, and Ferrell & Galifianakis. Overall, it was a bloated mess (both the show and Crystal).
I couldn't stop thinking how much better it was than last year. Not great, but far from one of the worst.
But last year's was kind of a fascinating, loopy trainwreck. This year's was just sad. I couldn't believe how dated it all felt. The jokes were so tired and flat. Lord love Billy Crystal, but watching him was like watching someone whose best days are far behind them. Maybe it's also cause I didn't give a sh*t about any of the nommed films (at least the ones I saw). The whole show was just disjointed and boring. Plus I HATE Cirque du Soleil. HATE.
I know this probably makes me a bad gay, but I would have much rather sat through the Ratner/Murphy awards than the Glazer/Crystal Dr. 90210 Pageant. Crystal looks like a burn victim and Grazer looked like something out of the Henson studios. And is it me, or did Tom Cruise look like he was wearing a 20 year old Tom Cruise mask??
I think Billy did his best considering he had no good jokes. Did Bruce Vallanche have the night off? The writing was just horrible. Back in the old days when Billy hosted the jokes jut came one after the other. Also, where were the stars? I remember when Jack Nicholson never use to miss an Oscar show. He always sat in front. Where was Streisand? Where were some of the older winners? George Chakiris? Rita Moreno? Julie Andrews? Warren Beatty?Faye Dunaway? And so on? Too many current Movie stars and not enough older Legends, which always makes the Oscars for me.
They should have done a thing with Chakiris, Moreno, Loren and Schell. They were the winners from 50 years ago and they're all still alive.
The problem with Crystal was that it felt like a huge step backwards. It felt like a calcified version of the Oscars...from somewhere in the mid-90's. I kept thinking, 'Jesus Christ, I'm too young for this SH*T!' And I'm 37 years old!
