The title of this thread made me recoil and not want to read it because I didn't want to read anything depressing. I did read it tonight and can only imagine how very disturbed you must be seeing a person killed. Whenever I hear of these freak accidents, I now picture them featured on "Six Feet Under" or "Dead Like Me." Somehow it makes it a little less painful.
His poor family, so sad.

I know it will be a bit of pain in rear (to put it mildly) but perhaps some good will come of it for that family. Closure if nothing else.

Posted: 4/26/04 at 8:12pmUnfortunately, if you read the initial post, it sounds like the victim might have unwittingly put himself in harm's way. As I see it, having to testify as to what happened may be exceedingly unpleasant for rlbgbc...who has my sympathy.

oh, I know that and I totally agree that it will be most unpleasant for rlbgbc. I'm just thinking about the family who must feel that their father/husband/boyfriend didn't do anything wrong and was killed for it.
I'm trying to say that perhaps if they hear what happened from another viewpoint, it might help them just a bit. rlbgbc has my total support and sympathy for having to relive that horrible incident.

I forgot to tell ya'll what I found out. The guy that got creamed was stopped by the side of the road to offer assistance to a disabled driver. AND...the reason that he was so far out in the road was that the disabled driver was a female, and he was being considerate by stepping away from the car, so as not to make her nervous.
I told the insurance investigator in my recorded statement that yes, the victim was too far out in the road; however, the driver of the truck had plenty of time to pull into the other lane. He was the next vehicle after me, and there was about 3/4 of a mile between us. Clear unobstructed view -- the driver of the truck just wasn't paying attention.
All that to say: if the driver's insurance (who I was talking to) was looking for a witness to support their case, I don't think they found one with me. He didn't sound too happy when we got off the call.

I am so sorry that you have to be a part of something this terrible, rlbgbc. I can't say that I've ever witnessed anything of the sort, but you and the deceased's family have my condolences.
Walking by the same person you've already walked by in the dairy, produce, and frozen-food sections.

And so he was a good guy who was killed trying to do a good thing.
Sigh. Death is not fair sometimes.
I'm glad you told the guy how it was, not what he wanted to hear, rlbgbc.

Posted: 4/28/04 at 7:51pmI can only imagine what that must have been like, both for you and that man's family. That's the most horrible and disturbing thing I've read all day. My condolences to everyone who had to witness that or who knew the man personally. It really does teach you how precious life is.

I read the initial post in this thread the first day it was put up and have avoided it since. It causes me to ermeber an incident iw as involved in. Many years ago I was the passanger in a car which was hit by a kid racing down a steep hill on his bike. After all this time it still makes me feel very sick to recall seeing this 10 year old boy come through the windshield and land pratically in my lap.
So, I know exactly how you must feel. It is something that can effect you for years and you should be prepared for that. The suggestions made here about seeking counseling are very good ones and you may want to consider that especially if you feel any after effects.
The kid who came through the windsheild did survive, fortunately, but it was horrible to witness. The windshield tore off part of the side of his neck. As I sat there in shock, with this child hanging into the car bleeding onto my lap, I remebre looking up and seeing part of his flesh hanging from the broken glass. The strange thought that went through my mind was taht it looked like raw chicken skin. To this day, I cannot buy chicken with skin on it, cannot even look at in the supremarket and will vomit if I see someone cutting away the skin on raw chicken. Initially, I would faint when watching someone do that. So,many years later, I have forgotten the incident unless it's brought up and forget why I have this aversion to looking at raw poultry. It happens and I don't think of why until someone brings up teh subject of accidents.
It may sound in that last part like I am making light of the occurance but, belive me, far from it. I just wanted to illustrate how the starngest thoughts can come into a persons mind when they are shocked like that and how it can continue to effect you in a way that may seem unrelated and how you may not realize why. Watch for things like that.

orion59 and mmajer, how horrible that you both witnessed what you did.
Orion, it was natural for you to "forget" seeing what you did. The mind will do things like that to protect itself. It just transfered the accident to chicken skin.

Posted: 5/10/04 at 7:44pmYeah, when you witness something like that it seems so unreal. I guess the brain tries to make quick assocaitions with non frightening images that can forever becom assocaited with the incident. That's why the idea of working through what you witnessed is a good one.
