I'm pretty sure this is why most career counselors recommend having a new job before savoring the satisfaction of telling your horrible boss that she can take this job and shove it.
I temp. Quite frankly, when I'm in the mood to blitz the auditions, I just let my temp agency know, the word trickles down, generally it's a-ok. Often, I've worked at places that have expected me to ask off for far more time than I actually do, so I wouldn't rule out temping. I'd also even say that chain restaurants aren't necessarily the way to go here in New York City. I mean, there's probably not a waiter here in Manhattan who isn't an actor or writer or something that requires flexibility and last-minute scheduling changes, so I'd just be bold and look for anything that catches your eye. For the record, I temped, waited tables, temped again, was a personal assistant, temped, waited tables and now I'm temping. This is the least flexible of all the temp jobs I've had but I prefer temping. You get into the right company and you don't feel so demeaned (and, quite frankly, my spirit and ego were bruised daily when I walked into my chain restaurant with a masters degree and had to debase myself before my GED-educated managers).
But I understand that at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. you get to eat for free! Thus saving $$ on Whole Foods Groceries. I'd go there if I were you cuz I loves me some shrimps!
LOL Suleen that is so disgusting. Not to mention, you can't eat fried shrimp everyday and be at peak physical/vocal condition.
Bwaysinger- good for you for quitting the restaurant. There's no reason for you to take bull**** from a high school dropout.
PS- for those who do 9-5, Actors Connection actually is worth doing. I've gotten great feedback AND have been called in by CDs I've auditioned for there. You have to pay, but at least you're guaranteed one full song/monologue. Open calls can be crap shoots.
But they have ALL KINDS of shrimps, not just fried. That's just the kind I like. I forgot to mention the advantages of working in a place with a UNIFORM. It will save you money on dry cleaning and having to buy new clothes. Not to mention the PRIDE you will have when you get on the subway in your uniform and people will say, "Oh, you work at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.? I looooove me some shrimps!"
Not yet Sueleen - but I'm not worried about that - I'm just enjoying the process - getting back out there and getting a chance to sing for people, even if it IS only 16 bars - its fun and I treat it as a chance to perform. There are plenty of great things coming up also! I've been singing every day and thats new for me - for years when I was working through my depression, I didn't sing a note - then last year when I was working on my cabaret act it felt so good to start vocalizing again - and now I make sure to sing for about 30 minutes a day - just to keep up the practice... Life is Good.

My friend who is an actor has been a real estate broker for the past few months and says it's great for actors. You make your own hours and basically just show apartments when you want to. Last month, he made 10K. It's not always that high, but it evens out. In slower months, you could always take a temp job.
It only takes 1 week of classes to get your certificate.
Google some major real estate companies in NYC- in the agent profiles, you'll see that several are Bradway actors (they even list their credits.)
Hey Cheno, I met with a company last week who has lots of actors and musicians working for them. As soon as I get the cash for the classes, I'm doing it. I can't think of a more prolific part-time job.

I fear you have to be good with figures to be a realtor - not to mention a good salesperson. I definitely don't posess either of those qualities!LOL...anywhoo - an update, you ask? I've decided I'm definitely having my mid-life crises now. I guess what I thought was one a few years back was just a prelude to this one!...I just can't figure out what I wanna be when I grow up - and I'm 43, fer chrissakes! Oy Vey!

redhot, you know better. You don't need to be a salesperson to rent apts. in NYC!! You know how it works - you've been apartment-hunting before. People are always clamoring for them. This isn't selling houses in the 'burbs.
As far as math skills, well, that's what calculators are for.

I dunno - My mom sold real estate for most of my life and it just never appealed to me. I even took the classes and was about a half-inch away from getting my license (when I was in my early 20s) and I just dropped it - I didn't like the people involved and it just didn't feel right to me. I need a career that is creativity focused - and that's a toughie when it comes to making money.

Again, this isn't what your mother did. This is renting highly in demand apartments.
And it wouldn't be your career - it's the means to the end, which is your creative career. This is a job where you make your own hours, do most of the work out of your house, and make lots more money than you were making at that office job that had you chained to a desk 8 - 9 hours a day. And when you leave for a tour, you stop the real estate stuff, and it's there when you get back. What other job gives you all that?
