Could someone please enlighten me? I cannot discern what it is about these three young upstarts that so many people have come to like. Why on Earth are these three "performers" so popular? I personally find them to be lacking in any kind of talent whatsoever. I have seen all of them live, and have been close to leaving the theatre each time. Nothing but the price of my ticket kept me uncomfortably planted in my seat. What is it that you people like about them so much???

That's your opinion. That doesn't mean it has to be everyone else's. No need to be uppity about it. People will like what they like, you don't have to agree.

Hmmm...
I saw Idina in Rent..and fell in love with her.
I saw Kristin in Wicked...and fell in love with her, so much that I saw her concert at Carnegie Hall and realised that this woman makes singing look absolutely effortless, with a huge stage presence for such a small person.
I saw Idina in Wicked and fell in love with her all over again.
Now, I have never seen Sutton, but I have heard her sing one or two songs, and I think she has a wonderful voice.

There is a reason why these three are constantly working...and thank goodness that your opinion is in the minority...VERY minority.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Hate to sound rude, but what DO you consider "talented"? If these women, some of the top Broadway preformers at the moment, have no talent, then who does?

I think the OP is pulling everybody's chain. Which is not a bad thing.

I think all three women are very talented (and I agree with Justice about Kristin's stage presence) and they all seem like sweet gals.... but I wish they were just a little bit more ....interesting.

I'm a huge fan of Sutton. When I saw her, she lit up the stage, and her voice was amazing. Powerful yet delicate, if that's the word. I thought she was perfect in every way. She was so engaged, and worked wonderfully in a mediocre show (I saw Little Women). She was the most amazing performer I have ever seen on stage. Now I haven't seen the other two live, but from what I have heard, I'm not a huge fan of Kristin. Her voice kind of irks me, but that's just me. I love Idina on her recordings but her live stuff that I have heard sounds mediocre and yelly (is that a word?). But I haven't seen either live. I can only assume that there is a reason that so many people love these two talented women.

I agree that the poster is being provocative. I also agree that there is nothing wrong with that.

When artists puts themselves out there, they know that there is no such thing as universal admiration even if their fans sometimes forget that.

I happen to admire all three women. Truly. But by no means do I consider either of them to be the alpha and omega of musical theater.

I also find it annoying that so many of their fans seem incapable of appreciating anyone but them. Frankly, the cults that have grown up around these women frighten me.

So I guess I'm saying that I have less of problem with them than some of their more obnoxious fans.

These three women, who have all won Tonys, are obviously very talented. On the other hand, there are teenage girls by the thousands out there dying for a mom figure and that's why they latch on to these women who have all taken female roles that are endearing to us. Elphaba, particularly, is a character to which I believe almost everyone can relate to in at least one point of their lives. And therefore the crazed fans are not necessarily as a result of the talent, (altho I do adore all three women and think they are fabulous). I mean, Shoshana Bean is a very talented woman, but why do you think she grew so quickly while she was a standby? I'd bet that it has something to do with the fact that she answered almost everyone's emails for a while...

They are all amazing. Idina is a powerhouse and is an extremely nice person. Kristen is just sweet and has a beautiful voice. Sutton can take a character and make her come to life even through a cast recording. These women all have amazing qualities.

Kristin not talented? Sutton not talented? Have you ever heard Kristin sing "Glitter and be Gay". Now do NOT tell me that that is not talent. And Sutton..she belts, she sings operatically, she dances, she acts..she's everything!

And, despite all the bad things I've said about Idina, there is no denying she has talent too.

May I ask who you like?

No, seriously, I want to know who you admire. What shows do you listen to? What performers? This isn't hostility or anger, this is curiosity.

I enjoy listening to each performer sing. Idina is the "diva" of the trio, in my opinion. She has this powerhouse voice and lungs of steel. The weakest, vocally, however, (still a terrific voice) because of her inconsistency in performance (from what I've heard...).

Kristen makes singing seem EFFORTLESS. It's just insane. Before, I only heard her on Wicked, and I said, "Oh, she can sing an E. Big deal, I can do that, Sarah Brightman can do that..."
Then I heard a recording of The Girl In 14G and just fell in love with her. She's just so versatile and, yes, her voice irks me at times (especially her speaking voice, ugh...) but it occured to me that she's a fabulous performer.

Sutton is one of those gems today that is a true "triple-threat". She can act, sing, and dance. She's a very "character" person and her voice is quite enjoyable to listen to. The first time I heard her voice (I forgot where it was...maybe Millie...), my jaw hung open until the song ended. I couldn't believe A) She was still 30 and she looked like a teenager, and B) Just the quality of her voice that attracted me.

All three women have different personalities and traits that draw a specific audience. I, myself, find all three of them quite enjoyable to listen to. However, these three women are performers of THIS generation. It doesn't mean that they'll erase Ethel, Bernadette, and Babs off the board...

I personally think all three are extremely talented. Anyone who dissagrees: The belting Sutton and Idina do takes lots of talent, as do the opera-high notes of Kristin Chenoweth

everyone has their opinions...but Idina didn't win the Tony for nothing.

at any rate, I think they're all talented young women, which is why they get so many roles. The end.

I agree with what everyone else said, especially about Sutton. I've seen her in three different shows and she's been great in all of them. She lights up the stage and is a wonderful triple threat.

I meant to add before: I think it is fine, if that's what this is, to ask a thought-provoking question about why people love performers and want to be provocative. I think that today, many people are "obsessed" with performers blindly because everyone else is. So it is perfectly acceptable to ask that. I happen to be one who adores Sutton, so so on Idina, and not a huge fan of Kristin. But I guess this shows that many people are actually fans of them.

Whether or not you personally enjoy these women's performances, to say that they are lacking in any talent whatsoever is absurd. Maybe they're not your thing, but they certainly have talent.

Menzel is probably one of the most emotionally engaged, passionate performers I've ever seen or heard and it comes across in everything she does. Not to mention she is a fine actres (contrary to popular belief on the boards, I think she is fantastic and I could write a novel on why).

Chenoweth's vocal talents are undeniable. I'm actually not particularly a fan of hers, but the girl can sing. Her range is incredible, and she can do quite a few different styles.

Sutton has proven to be the real deal. She is a master at physical comedy, and her comedic timing is brilliant. She can belt, she can sing legit, she can act dramatically.

And all of these women are unique and have their own charm and that "it" factor that causes everyone to like them.

Honestly, I'd also like to hear a few performers that you find talented. You don't have to think these women are all that and a bag of chips, but they've got something going on, that's for sure. If they were truly no talents, anyone from the streets could get up there and do what they do, and that's most definitely not the case.
