"And I really don't get why people have a problem with the aliens story line. Because the mystical magical Christian and pagan rituals and sequences were so much more believable?"
I've been curious about that as well, Mr. M - and for exactly that same reason. I keep reading opinions that basically state, "I wish he hadn't gone THERE." Well, why not - especially in view of where the movies have already gone?
It seems like a waste that they are not having Indy explore Atlantis. I mean, then two would be perfect. I hear they said they have run out of McGuffins for Indy to search for. There are tons of other artifacts and objects Indy could search for.
I had even heard they considered remaking one of the old episodes of "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" as an Indy film. The Spear of Destiny, Noah's Ark,The Gaza Pyramids, etc. Why not mix up Indy with a National Treasure like theme? Have him search for treasure on Oak Island?
If George Lucas is reading this, call me. Lets talk. We'll do lunch. I work for a fair fee.

Aw, Indian Jones...It had its moments.
SPOILER ALERT:
But why the hell was it about aliens? I just...ech. I really liked the end though cause I wasn't sure if Mutt was gonna pick up the fedora or not. It was a nice little way to keep everyone guessing.
LucasArts actually made this FABULOUS video game in the early nineties called Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Obviously, it was about Indy searching out Atlantis. It's really an awesome game, and I know a lot of people were hoping that elements of the plot might make it to the new movie. I seem to remember at some point someone involved in the movie saying they didn't want to repeat plots, hence the lack of Atlantis.
As for the movie...I actually think it's better than Temple of Doom, which I really dislike. The aliens did seem rather weird... Or, if not aliens, "inter-dimensional beings." I though it was a pretty fun time: good, but not great.
I felt the same. The aliens seemed out of place. Also, I am all for the crystal skull. The Mitchel Hedges skull being the famous crystal skull. So, why did they have to make the skull an alien skull?
Even though the film was fun and I did enjoy it, it was flawed more than the others (but I did enjoy it so much more than Temple of Doom)
If they do an Indy 5 we know Marion and Mutt will have to be in it (hopefully Sallah will be in part 5. I missed him in this new one)
Lets all just pray Spielberg is not too busy and George Lucas decides to direct it.

"But why the hell was it about aliens?"
A: The film is set in 1957, so Lucas and Spielberg decided since the first three were set in the 1930s and were based off of the cliffhanger matinee movies of the 30s, that since this is set in the 50s, why not make it like the B sci fi movies of the 50s.
B: I'm getting really tried of saying this, do the research on the skulls. There are some who believe that the Mayans couldn't have possibly made these skulls with the tools and technology that they had at their disposal back then and that it would have taken them hundreds of years just to make one. There are some who believe that they could've been made by aliens.
C: What's so wrong about having aliens in an Indiana Jones movie? It's something different for the films. I wasn't bothered by it on bit. I mean, it's not as far fetched as ghosts that came out of the Ark along with the exploding head, the shrunken head, and of course the melting head in Raiders, pulling someone's heart out of there chest while they are still alive and then there not being a mark in Temple of Doom, or the knight who is extremely old guarding the holy grail. So, what's wrong with aliens?
I would like to an Indy five where they bring back Sallah(he should've been in Skull) and go after something like the fountain of youth.
I have a question: Why does it NOT have to be about aliens? Is there some unwritten international law regarding Indiana Jones plot lines? I seriously do not understand why people are in such a huff over this. Would someone who has a problem with it please tell me precisely which mythical beings and mystical episodes are appropriate for an Indiana Jones film?
I saw this yesterday, and enjoyed it. Given the excessive CGI trends in movies today, it could have been so much worse. Spielberg kept it era-appropriate and consistent with the prior three movies without being repetitive. There were several nice remembrances of Marcus Brody - thank you for that. I have reservations about Shia LeBoeuf but he certainly can act. Good to see Jim Broadbent inherit a nice supporting role. But for me it was all Harrison Ford. Most of his recent movies have been painful but Ford seems to inhabit Indiana, and he was wonderful. Any attempt to continue this series as "Son of..." is doomed to failure, IMO.
SPOILER:
One of the best moments was the camera angle from above when Indiana makes his first "entrance."
