IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE sequel coming to the big screen in 2014. ....WHAT?

Scheduled for release during the 2014 holiday season, the plot of It’s a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story will answer the questions: ‘Whatever happened to George Bailey?’ ‘Did Mr. Potter really got away with stealing $8,000?’ and ‘Did George ever get to build those bridges?’”

Okay, my head is spinning.

Let me just analyze that paragraph really quickly:

1) Hideous title -- It's a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story

2) "Whatever happened to George Bailey?" a typo. It should be "What ever happened to George Bailey?"

3) "Did Mr. Potter really got away with stealing $8,000?" -- did you really got away with that grammar?

Good ... GOD.

If I were writing it, we'd find out that actually every time a bell rang, an angel went to hell. And when now 100 year old George finds out that Clarence is being kept in the 9th circle of hell, he must leave behind everything he knows and venture down to save his old friend. Because while life might be wonderful, death is a bitch.

To answer the question: why is this happening?

Because it can. This movie has been in the public domain for many years. That's why it's been out on home video by something crazy like 20 different companies over the past two decades.

You want to adapt or remake the story? It's free! Go ahead.

And good luck.

In a tour de force performance that will garner her nominations in all four acting categories, Meryl Streep will play every role, including Zuzu.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

Maybe someone else here can explain how something that fell out of copyright years ago can suddenly fall back into copyright.

I realize Paramount purchased the Republic Pictures catalogue, including It's a Wonderful Life and its original negative elements (which is why their Blu-ray Disc of the film looks so good), but the copyright to that film lapsed decades ago, as this article points out.

So how did they "lapse" back in?

Lou Lumenick has been tweeting constantly that it appears the people behind this have no clue about the specifics. He details in this piece:

It also includes the video made by Farnsworth stating his idea of a sequel. His company mostly does advertising, not narrative films. I think this is just some guy's quixotic fantasy.

I guess Farnsworth and the writer of the Hollywood Reporter article — or Variety, which breathlessly broke the click-baiting “exclusive’’ yesterday — didn’t even bother checking Wikipedia. If they had, they’d’ve discovered that while the copyright for the film itself expired in 1974 because of a paperwork error, the copyright for the story that inspired the film (“The Greatest Gift’’) was properly renewed in 1971.

Thanks for sharing that, strummergirl! There's the answer.

By the way, I always loved how this film was based on a short story sent out on a Christmas card one year. So Jordan, you're right, It's a Wonderful Story.

It's also a copyrighted story.

I was guessing there was some element of it that was still legally protected even if the film isn't anymore. I would have guessed a trademark on the characters or likenesses, etc. Just like Warners has done with the ruby slippers and Disney has done with Mickey Mouse, etc.

Quick, Paramount, trademark Zuzu's petals!

I wonder if Farnsworth and that production company can ask Clarence the Angel to show them what it would be like if they had never made that announcement yesterday.
