All About Eve - 196_(7?)
adapted into Applause, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical for 1970. (and it's nowhere near the calibre of the film...in fact, it's really not that good. The score borders on plain awful)
Rent the film out, You'll certainly enjoy it!
The lead is Margo Channing (ring any bells) who is a famous Broadway Star, who ends up being usurped by a Girl, Eve Harrington, who started out as miserable Urchin that gets taken into Ms. Channings dressing room after Opening Night of her hit new play. Eve soon contrives to control Margo's life, gets cast as her understudy, then organises Margo to be stuck out of town so she will have to go on, and contacts the press.
Margo has a very...interesting...temperament. That is what I was hinting at to Lael, my drama queen. Updated On: 12/16/04 at 08:10 AM

You certainly do need to see it. But the film more than the musical. I dare say you might hate the musical.
I could easily hate it...Charles Strouse's score borders on obnoxious, repetitive sh!t.
It has two good songs.
And about 4 reprises of the worst song in the show.

I don't hate La Cage. I actually quite like it. Jerry Herman's style has always slightly done it for me, but not quite. His songs are repetitive, but there is much beauty in them.
Applause cannot even claim being in the same Ball Park as La Cage. Applause makes La Cage looke like Sweeney Todd or Sunday in the Park With George (which should have won the Tony over La Cage without a doubt)

I'm guessing you don't agree?
Of course, I am What I Am is the absolute stand-out of the score, and no other song comes near it. THe book is outdated, and fails to do anything remotely interesting as far as gay pride is concerned. And now they kiss as the curtain comes down! WOO BLOODY HOO!
But, the show certainly has its merits, you must admit, as I will admit that ALW has his merits, even if he is not my songwriter of choice. But then...there is only one Sondheim!
