It wouldnt beat Crash or Brokeback
thanks, Bway86! I appreciate your post. Now that I see the films that were nominated that year, my favs were Hedwig and Ghost World. Neither of them were huge Hollywood films with broad release, so not that many people saw them. Even if large numbers saw Hedwig, it's too esoteric a story to win anything and is in the same category with films like Transamerica and BBM-too controversial. Plus, if you hadn't seen Hedwig on stage, the film may not mean as much. I thought Hedwig was one of the most accurate and loyal transfer from stage to film that I've ever seen. Even more so because those who thought Hedwig and Tommy were the same person got clarification from the film.( BTW, I'm on the Hedwig DVD!)
re: If MOULIN ROUGE were released in 2005...(Oscars)...
..."Chicago" might not have won Best Picture the following year. Moulin Rouge helped pave the way and open people's eyes to the notion of a "good" film musical that would appeal to modern audiences.

I loved Moulin Rouge. Hated Romeo and Juliet.
I don't think Chicago would've gotten so far without the actors tied to it.
On a side note, IMDB.com says that Baz has an untitled project coming out with Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. It looks like the Aussies are getting together.

I almost wept wtih joy when I first saw that, Cap'n. If there's one thing I love more than a Baz Luhrmann project, it's Nicole Kidman in a Baz Luhrmann project.

Hopefully it won't be a train wreck.
