re: If someone tries to put you down for being a gay man...

It all depends on how they try to put me down, I guess. I don't know why, but this really doesn't happen to me. At least not to my face.

But if it did, my comeback would depend on what they're saying.

Trace... family is so difficult. My problem was my mom, but I was inspired by Harvey in Torch Song, and once after a bf broke up with me and I was devastated-as devastated as you can be at 21, she tried to blow it off, and, again, inspired by Harvey, went off on a tirade about respect, and how if she wanted me in her life she needed to accept me for who I was, yadda yadda yadda. It was great. She's awesome now. Both of my parents are.

That's really a tough question. I'm not sure how to answer that. But I remember back in the '80s I got thrown up against the side of a house and called faggot. I wish I had known what to say then.

My aunt told my cousin he needed to experience a woman before he could tell people he's gay... he asked her if she was making an offer, and told her SHE needed to experience a woman before she could tell people she's straight.

tell them to go kill themselves.

"you must be really uncomfortable with your own sexuality to have to make an issue of someone else's."

this works, too!

not all gay people love to go shopping, thats sort of sterotypical. lol.

Well, this rarely happens to me ! But once or twice it happened I spoke in the only language they understand. Thank God my job pays a lot, so I told them " Yeah, I am gay and all that and you are so much better than me, but I make $....thousand a month, how much do YOU make ? " That shuts them up ! Of course I'd never use that in any other argument, but it really works with jerks like that! :)

I often get male students asking me if I'm gay. I ask them why they want to know. They rearely respond. I follow that with a question: "Are you suddenly getting a case of the 'warm fuzzies' for me? If you are, I'll make an appointment with the guidance department and we can both discuss the matter with down there." It shuts them up like clams.

re: If someone tries to put you down for being a gay man...

this happened to me just a couple of hours ago at a mexican restaurant. This very nasty old woman in front of started to tell me off, mainly because I stood up for myself to the waitress who was being a pain, and when I told the old woman that no one asked for HER opinion, she had the nerve to say.....'You are like that because of your lifestyle". I said, what did you say you say?", she made another nasty comment and I called her a bitch.
Then the restaurant asked ME to watch my language, and I told them and the old witch what they could do with themselves and walked out.
they don't know me, how dare they even say that....pissed me off.

Elphaba- let's go get that "Window Chalk" and write on their windows "Homophobic Amigos"

So the old woman butted in your business? Did you "Z" her our or roll your eyes and smack your lips? Because that usually shows them. (But if I were with you- I would have raised hell just as much.)

This white trash grandma said something smart to me today and I pretty much insulted her all the way to her car.

Krispy Kreme. 5pm. I'm leaving and I push the door that's locked. So being the silly man I am I go "They locked me in! They must want me to stay!" The old white trash granny goes through the other door and says to her grandson, she says: "Some people can't read."

I smacked my lips and rolled my eyes and then followed her to her car (she was parked next to me) and started saying "Some people are rednecks. Some people's asses clap when they walk." etc.

She then got in her car, lit up a cigarette with the windows UP and her grandson in the car.

I rest my case.

On the positive side, I got free donuts for being so cute. I love my KKD girls.

Oh- this was about being gay and insulted. Of course...I made it all about me. Typical gay.

re: If someone tries to put you down for being a gay man...

Following her may have been a little harsh simply because she had her grandson with her...
So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.~Office Space

I think her grandson was completely oblivious because he had his KKD box and was trying to eat them as he walked.

She was yelling at him for that...so who knows if SHE even heard me.

Immaturity has a grace-period. And I was granted mine this evening.

I find the weakness in them and rip them apart verbally.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

re: If someone tries to put you down for being a gay man...

I don't understand why you have to say anything. I tend to not put any value on ignorant comments. Even here on BWW. Of course, I can't say that anyone ever put me down for being gay. At least not to my face. Of course, I'd probably kick their ass. I think most people can sense that.

And Liam, ask away. People don't have to respond, if they think it's too personal.

re: If someone tries to put you down for being a gay man...

Because by not saying anything, you let them win, and their ignorance lives on. You have to say something in order for them to realise that gay people are not easy targets, otherwise, they'll continue. Keeping quiet is cowardice.

Justice, I can see where you're coming from, but I don't really see anything wrong in shrugging and walking away. It gives an attacker, one who will probably just keep talking to try and save face, less to work with.
