If the pilot of the airplane that you are on dies while you are flying, do you want to know?
I sure don't want to know!!!!!! If they are able to control the situation with the co-pilot taking over, then I don't want any unnessary panic at all!

That's a photo of me if I knew ^. I'm a fearful flyer as it is, no need to send me over the edge.

As somebody on another board wrote, "Attention please, ladies and gentlemen, this is your NEW captain speaking..."
Are you the mom of Yasmina Reza? She's afraid of flying too...but she overcame that fear to be at the Tony Awards :)
No.
If the lives of the passengers are not in danger I think keeping that information from them is for the best.

No - I took Amtrak to the Tonys. No one died on the train, so far as I know.
NO. I don't have a fear of flying so much as I do of landing. I'm fine during takeoff and the flying part, but I tend to get very nervous when we touch down. I always feel like one of the wings will tip down just far enough to catch the tarmac and we'll go cartwheeling and exploding down the runway.
I have just the opposite fear, Mister Matt. I feel better during take off and landing because you aren't as high up in the sky (as if that makes any difference). I am always a nervous wreck when we are at 35,000 feet and there is the least bit of turbulence.
I'm SURE we are going down....I really hate flying.

Thanks, MM, I hadn't thought of that. Like Danmag, I always breath a sigh of relief the closer we get to the ground.
I guess I won't anymore.

Glad to see there are some who are the same as me, I'm with Bluemoon and Danmag, it's the bit in the middle where you're at 35,000 feet trapped in a tin can that I can't stand. I really love the takeoff as I'm a speed freak and I always breathe a sigh of relief on landing.
And no, I really don't want to know if the pilot has just kicked the bucket in the cockpit, even though I know that there are co-pilots and whatever, it isn't a good omen is it?
Announcing the pilot died to the passengers mid-flight is like shouted "Fire!" in a crowded theatre.
I love flying, but I get claustrophobic and edgy when everyone is standing cramped in the aisle with all their luggage, waiting to deplane. I also think TSA employees all have personality disorders and therefore I loathe airports, but that has nothing to do with actually flying.
I hate, hate, hate flying. Hate it. Landing is the only part I can deal with. Any time there is the least amount of turbulence, I freak out, and there's been some very bumpy turbulence on the past couple of flights I've taken. Awful. I have to take a Xanax and even that doesn't help a lot of the time.
That said, I don't think it'd be a good idea to announce the pilot's death but I, for one, wouldn't be alarmed. The co-pilot is able to fly the plane. That's why I'm so disgusted with the news sensationalizing everything - "The pilot died - HOW ON EARTH DID THEY SURVIIIIIVE???" Please. There's a co-pilot and relief pilot. I feel terrible for the poor pilot and his family, but that's the extent of the panic I'd feel.
Exactly, Shbrt. I couldn't believe the news reports this morning exclaiming the wonder of the co-pilots landing the plane and the passengers knew nothing. IT'S THEIR JOB!!!
And count me among those who hate flying. I do, however, love Paris. So, there you have it.
I love Paris in the springtime.
Paris was ok. I liked it, but didn't fall in love with it or anything. I much prefer Berlin, Barcelona and Oporto.
I hate everything about flying, but especially the take-off. I'm fine when we land. In fact, that's when I relax.
As my grandmother used to say, "When you're in a car and it stops working, there you are; when you're on a plane and it stops working, there you ain't."
Is there anything that grandmother of yours hasn't said, Stagey?

i love Stagey's grandmother.
I'm taking the bus to Italy next year.
You could sail to England, Moony, and then take the train. It's a bit faster than the bus.

Megabus is cheaper, Deet.
Moony, book me a seat while you're at it!
