"You dad is active duty in the military so they are paying for YOU to get breast reduction surgery?
How does that work?"
ah the joys of a republican administration.....

Elphaba, all it means is that her father has a very good health insurance plan as a result of his military service, and the insurance covers breast reduction surgery. She is covered under her father's plan as any child is covered by their parent's plan.

My friend who I go to school with in 9th grade was having such horrible back pains from her boobs being to large, that she had the surgery during our freshmen year and was out for three months.
The funny thing was when she came back these stupid girls in my History class were like "You look different... did you cut you're hair" and my friend and I just laughed. We were like "Yeah, she was out for three months and all she did was cut her hair."

Posted: 9/9/06 at 11:54amMy mother had it done about 3 years ago and went from at least a DDD to a small C (about the size she was before she had children). She had a pretty rough time the week or two after the surgery, but that might have been more because of the Vicodin the surgeon prescribed than the surgery itself. She also had a couple of minor procedures later on to minimize the scars. It's really made her a much happier person - the back pain she dealt with because of her boobs has gone away, she no longer has to buy "shapeless old-lady clothes" to accommodate her chest and she's lost a good deal of weight since the surgery because she feels less uncomfortable/self-conscious working out.

Good luck with your surgery. Just take it easy afterward.
I don't have anything personal to add, I just wanted to say how impressed I am that this thread is on it's second page and seriously still on topic! Nice.

Posted: 9/9/06 at 12:24pmIt is not difficult to get an insurance company to pay for it. Your doctor has to deem it medically needed, which most of them will. My parents' insurance paid for mine at 17.

Thanks so much for all the support, everyone. It's nice to see how common this procedure is - it's one thing for the doctor to TELL you lots of people have it done, but another for people to say they've personally had it done.
JerseyGirl, the doctor did warn me there was a 30% chance I won't be able to breastfeed.

I agree with both - hopefully I'll feel less uncomfortable working out as well. =]
I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

Good luck! Surgery is always scary, but the end result is going to be such a relief. :)
I wish I could have this surgery done...I used to be an F - at the age of 14 - and I went to a lady who specializes in breast reduction and she told me I was too young. I can understand that, but it wasn't any less crushing. I was crying before we left the office. She told me to come back in a year, but I was still too young, so we never went.
I lost weight between then and now, but I still have all that stretch-marked skin left. D: My mom is convinced it'll go away with exercise...I'm pretty sure I would have to exercise for 200 years straight for that to happen.

Several of my dearest friends have had this procedure (what can I say, I collect well-endowed girlfriends!), and yes, the recovery is very painful, and you are probably going to wish you were dead for a few days.
HOWEVER, take your medication and keep yourself in a fog for a few days, and you'll be fine.
Also, as soon as your breasts heal enough that you can touch them without significant pain, liberally apply vitamin E oil/ointment to them every day. It will help minimize any scarring, and will also help with any stretch marks/skin discoloration that might result from a drastic reduction in your breast size.
Ain't nobody want no Frankentitties!
(I LOVE that you said that, JG2...my girlfriends always used to use that word, and it slays me every time!)

Posted: 9/19/06 at 3:19pmLet me give you a generational view. I had it done in 1978 when the surgery was still fairly new. I was 19 at the time, a sophomore in college. It was the best thing I could have ever done. It changed me inside and out. I was not particularly uncomfortable during the recovery and the pain was minimal. I am now 47, married 20 years to a wonderful man, we have a terrific 17-year-old son. I was not able to breast-feed and it didn't matter to me AT ALL either when I elected to have the surgery or when I gave birth to my son. I would pay that price again for what it added to the quality of my life and the way I felt about myself. I have no regrets and am thankful that I had a mother who knew how miserable I was, sought out the information about the procedure and told me that it was possible. Today my breasts are slightly larger and less perky than when I had the surgery, but that's due to just getting older. Good luck. You will NOT regret it.

That other thread "Boob jobs" reminded me of this thread. I'd like to know how the procedure went if dramaparoxysm23 wants to share.
