Now we don't use to talk about shows of 10-20 years ago, in this board, people talk sometimes about les miserables or cats or shows that are still playing...
but...
in 10 years we will be talking about wicked, avenue q, hairspray...? or we're going to have this shows forgotten?

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:06pmIn my opinion, there will only be a few shows that will run long and will still be talked about like Les Miz, Cats and Phantom. I think they are Hairspray, Wicked, and The Producers.

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:08pmI think THE PRODUCERS will run for about 8 more years, HAIRSPRAY about 10 more years and WICKED about 2 more years.

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:09pmThe WICKED craze will end soon and once the full OBC is gone, it will lose a lot of what people love about it. I don't see it being around in a few years.

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:16pmI agree... wicked will fade out in a few years...

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:31pmI personally think that Wicked will be like The Lion King, and run for a while because of the intrigue it sets on tourists. I mean, when Joel, Norbert, and Cheno left, ticket sales didnt go down. They went UP! And the shows been in 1st place for a month. And Idina Menzel isnt a huge star like Bernadette Peters or someone of that nature. Most tourists (no offense if any of you are tourists) dont know/care about whos who in the cast. They just wanna see a good show. Updated On: 8/28/04 at 10:31 PM

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:33pmThe production of wicked it's hard to produce worldwide and on tour... so it's difficult that if the show just live in broadway become a classic worldwide....
#10re: In 10 years...
Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:34pmI think it will. The tour will gather many people to it.

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:34pmTHE LION KING had Elton John attached to it. And it was based on one of the highest grossing movies of all-time. I don't think many people know who Schwartz is, like they do Elton. And WICKED the novel is not nearly as popular and well-known as THE LION KING the movie.

Well, I still talk about Dreamgirls (despite the fact it closed on Broadway before I was born)
Honestly, I believe the shows that will be remembered are going to be the ones that have been hits that can be done regional. Hairspray is gonna be the next Bye Bye Birdie. Rent will be performed at colleges evertwhere. As for Wicked and Q, although they are two of my personal favorites, I really don't have a sure opinion about their afterlife. I think they will both still be talked about but as far as actually put into production, Wicked will be very expensive and as for Q, well it depends on the future of puppetry.
Unfortunately, I bet very few people will remember The Normal Heart or I Am My Own Wife.

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:35pmThe Lion King is a perfect comparison, it won't become a legendary work of art, but it's popular.

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:37pmStick- What about Hairspray? That didnt have a big name like Elton's on the marquee. I think its just word of mouth. Wicked (in my mind) will be a forever remembered musical.

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:37pmOf course you think it will run forever. Your screen name is WiCkEdRoCkS. The fact is that it does not have what it takes to sustain a long life once this craze dies.

"Stick- What about Hairspray?"
There in lies the difference. HAIRPSRAY was a well-written, well-put together piece of theatre.

Matt- Well, I think it does. And I never said it will run forever. I said it will be remembered for a long time and have a pretty fulfilling run.
(insomiak is right. Wicked will become a popular musical, not a great work of art.)

You're icon need a serious makeover!!!
Send him to the same doctor as your others; those boys looked great!

Posted: 8/28/04 at 10:40pmStick- People dont know that Hairspray is well put together peice. They just know its a box-office hit and that everyone loves it. Most tourists dont judge a show by whos in it or how its constructed. They think if its popular, it must be good.

I agree with Matt, somebody with the screen name "wickedrocks" surely it's not much objective...
this remains me the legions of rent fans, who now are disappeared, or they just talk about rent and don't care about other musicals... There are lots of fans of just 1 musical, and they don't care about the others.
I'm not talking about you, wickedrocks, for example, this year I met the spanish fan club of the phantom of the opera of madrid, and they are like 200, and they don't mind about others musicals, and they even don't care about the original version! they are just fans of the madrid production of poto...

"They think if its popular, it must be good. "
And it can run on popularity alone for a few years. So WICKED and HAIRSPRAY are both popular. But to make it for the long run they must be more than that. They must be a good evening of theatre with well-written music and a solid book. Thus HAIRSPRAY will outlast WICKED.

I suppose I fall under the category of people who don't know much about many shows, just a ton about one. But it's not my fault, really... and you should know, POL,
The Rentheads have not disapeared
