I am putting together my New York trip and I need to book a hotel. I found the Days Inn on Broadway to be under $600 for July 19-23. It looks to be basic from the web site but I was wanting some first hand advice.
I want a place within walking distance to the shows, but I don't mind walking several blocks (I walked 30 blocks to see Sweeney Todd because my travel partners wanted to stay close to the bars).
I have spent more on shows than I had planned so now I want to try to save some money on lodging.
Any input would be great. Thanks.
I think the Paramount has rooms for slightly under $100.00 a night. They're small, but they look really cool. and it's literally in the middle of the theatre district.
If you reeeeeeally wanna rough it, my visits to NY were always at the Greenpoint YMCA. If you don't mind shared bathrooms. It was always clean and nice but very very very low rent. A deluxe room is about $350 for a week. It's a trip into Manhattan, too, but not long. You probably won't be staying at the hotel very long, anyway.
tazber- thanks, went to their site, looks cool, but they are booked for my dates.
Borstalboy- I don't wanna go that rough, this trip is a vacation and birthday present to myself. I'm looking for that place between the YMCA and the W.
Sally -- Here's what TripAdvisor has to say about the Days Inn.
Have you checked into the Milford? I stayed there last June and it was relatively cheap. I'm not sure what the prices are like now though.

There is a small hotel called I think The 414 and it is at 414 W 46th St which is betw 9th & 10th. Small rooms, small rate, but what do you need?
Hit Google and see what turns up.
There's also the West Side YMCA. Again, it's very basic, but relatively cheap. It's up by Columbus Circle right off the park so it's pretty close to everything.
I was in NY this past weekend and stayed at 1291, I paid $234 for two nights in a private bedroom sharing one bathroom per floor (there was just another room in my floor). That included free breakfast. That's on 55th W between 8th and 9th av. It took me about a minute to get to Studio 54 from there and just a couple of blocks to get to the other theatres. It is also pretty close to Lincoln Center.

Ray, who told you about that place? He must be a great friend!
Portland Square Hotel! The staff is awesome.
Haha, muscle23 deserves full credit for telling me about that place
Portland Square looks good. I can't get the site to check my exact dates, it only lets me enter July.
Has anyone else stayed there?
You can use Expedia.com to check the rates of the Portland Square. For the dates that you are looking for the only available room is a studio with an average price of $191.80 per night.
dont use hotels.com
we booked a room with two beds and a refridgerator.
we got to the hotel and they reserved a room with one bed and no fridge.
we hod to leave and go back an hour later when the correct room was ready.
the guy at the front desk said that happens all the time with hotels.com
I'll second the recommendation for Portland Square. The rooms are pretty basic and there's no food service, but I never get food at hotels anyway. Great location and it's cheap.
But never, ever stay at the Carter.
OK, now my friend wants to stay in Chelsea, so we are looking at Comfort Inn Chelsea, formerly The Arrlington.
Any thoughts?
I stayed at the Portland Square. Basic, but TOO convenient. I'd definitely stay there again if I wanted to be really central. There were two websites available for it last I checked. http://www.portlandsquarehotel.com/ is one, but I can't find the other at this point. XP Try browsing through cheaphotels.com for it, that's how I found it in the first place.
Just read an article in The Daily News today (NY Sunday Edition) re: this new "pod" style hotel in the East 50's, i think. Very tiny in area, but about $89.00, equipped with wireless internet connection, ipod dock, shared bathroom outside of room for singles), I think small bath w/doubles. There was a snapshot in the paper. Maybe you can find it on line? Good luc!k
I live down the block from the Paramount. Euro chic, very small rooms, but good security ,good service and walking distance of all theaters.
