Perhaps I need to get out of my socially progressive... quiltbag, but it seems odd to me that someone hasn't even heard the term "intersex" in 2014. But then I asked my grandmother and she had no idea what it meant either, so, there's that.

Another common acronym is just saying LGBTQ+, though it isn't used as much because people take offense as to not being included in the acronym, and I still just use GSM

2-Spirited is a Native American/First Nations concept related to gender role transgression. They traditionally considered there to be four genders: masculine men and feminine women, one spirited, and feminine men and masculine women, two-spirited. The two-spirited people were said to have shamanic tendencies and were considered holy in a way.

A decidedly binary idea of Gayness though based on your description: feminine men and masculine women only. Wonder what those cultures would make of manly men who love men, and womanly women who love women?

I won't lie. Having read and seen so much about intersexed individuals in the past decade (there are a couple of interesting documentaries), just after proudly announcing to my wife, "Baby, she's blonde!" (I won that bet), I checked out her junk to see if anything else was going on down there.

I'm also pretty surprised at the number of people who didn't know the term. For the record, it's a replacement for the term hermaphrodite, which is not considered an appropriate label anymore, so should not be used in addition to intersex.
Anyways, intersex people are much more common than society would like anyone to believe. No, not some big majority of people, but there's definitely more gender assignment happening directly after birth than people think.

^Which is why I wanted to know immediately. Many of the stories of children whose parents chose the incorrect gender at birth were heartbreaking. I was fully prepared to argue what would actually be "best" for my child.

There was an episode of Masters of Sex that involved a plotline with an intersex baby. I believe it was Season 2, Episode 3, "The Fight".

I am pretty sure there was an ER episode, too. The mom died in childbirth and the father was left to face it alone.
