Is 'After Earth' Will Smith's 'Battlefield Earth'?

It's never a good sign when your movie is compared to Battlefield Earth. Not only does 'After Earth' have a 13% rating on RottenTomatoes , many critics are noticing the influence of Scientology.
I didn't even know this was directed by M. Night Shyamalan until this week. I guess "a film by M. Night Shymalan" isn't good marketing anymore.
Only took in one million on opening night. Looks set up to be a legendary bomb. Anyone see it? Is it as bad as it sounds?

The AV Club was mixed, but gave good marks for the direction
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I am so glad this is going to flop big time, can't stand the Smith"s. someone needs to slap that horrible child off the screen.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I think the best comparison I've read so far is that this is the big budget Hollywood equivalent to Rebecca Blacks "Friday" music video. An overly produced vanity project that mom and dad bought for their spoiled teenager.

I can't remember the last time I felt THIS turned off by a movie before and have rooted for it's failure.

Yuck!

It may be wishful thinking, but I'm hoping that no one goes to see this movie. I'm not speaking figuratively, I mean literally NO ONE.

Its tracking estimate was 35 million heading into the weekend (a poor showing for a film with this budget).

Today it's looking to bring in 20-25 million. I can't recall ever seeing a film cave in that badly before its third day.

UPDATE: M. Night Shyamalan and Sony’s “After Earth” is cratering at the domestic box office, with an estimated $10 million Friday and paltry $25 million-plus weekend, according to early estimates.

The $130 million film was expected to launch in the $35 million-$40 million range but those figures are long gone.

What multinational corporation in its right mind would hire that guy to direct a movie with a budget more than five dollars?

I don't know how in the world I didn't know this was an M. Night Shamalamadingdong movie! I will never understand how after making one great film (SIXTH SENSE), one halfway serviceable film (THE VILLAGE), one of the absolute worst films in the history of history (UNWATCHABLE) and a slew of other crap, how that man is still trusted to make a movie and given money to do so.

What's odd is that I've seen the trailer a hundred times before other movies and I don't think one of them mentions him as director. I think that's hilarious.

Sony deliberatly left his name off all promotional material for the movie. The reasoning was that they knew folks would be turned off if they knew the film was directed by Shyamalan, so they instead relied heavily on Will Smith as the key draw.

The whole thing is just a vanity project for Will Smith anyway, intended to further propel Jaden's career. From what I heard, there are already plans for a sequel, although after this weekend they might be scrapped.

The most amazing thing about Shayamalan is that despite a string of massive bombs (not just flops, bombs) he still has an ego bigger than half of Hollywood.

I think Jaden comes across as a spoiled child who gets whatever he wants, in every interview I've ever seen him in.

I laughed at the interview where his father stopped the whole thing when a reporter asked Jaden about his love life.

Will, If you are going to force your children into the public eye, you should know they are going to get asked things you may not like. It comes with the territory.

The man made a move about killer grass. And not the good kind you smoke, the kind you mow.

And then there was the utter awfulness of The Last Airbender.

don't forget the one where earth was invaded by aliens whose weakness was water, which covers 90% of the surface of the planet.

I actually liked 'Signs' in spite of those admittedly stupid plot points. And the redemption theme could have been a little more subtle. But I thought it was well made and had some great scenes. 'The Happening' was awful but almost worth it for that crazy scene with Betty Buckley.
I think he really started to go off the rails with 'Lady In The Water'. I wonder if he's gotten sucked into Scientology. Or if he just figures a Will Smith Sci-fi vehicle was a sure way to make it back to the top of the box office.
