"Some corporal punishment is okay, just not sure where that line should be drawn."

I think if we can't agree on where the line should be drawn, then it's best not to draw the line.

Personally, I think an immediate response in the moment (a swat on the ass if a kid is trying to run into the street or on the hand if they're trying to touch an open flame) is very different from a planned beating. And that's really what 'the belt' or 'the switch' is. I find that barbaric and disgusting.

There's a time and place for everything and corporal punishment belongs at Paddles NYC every Sunday night.

It's easy to say "well my parents smacked me and I turned out ok". That's anecdotal.

And it can also be true. I'm sure there are lots of studies that make "strong associations" to many different things, including the rise in self-centered entitled behavior and a lack of sense of consequence in correlation with the absence of corporal punishment of more recent generations. But none of that changes the truth in one's personal experience. I just wasn't included in any particular study.

The statement that "corporal punishment is child abuse" is far too general, making it opinion, not fact.

Exactly Matt! I agree with everything you said.

There are thousands of "studies" and you can find one to back any theory on the face of the earth that you like.

My parents (both of whom were European immigrants) always complained about the American spoiled brats. They would swat me on the butt on occasion, but that wasn't a big deal. What was a big deal? When my mother slapped me in the face, hit me on the head, pulled my hair, screamed at me, and called me awful names. The verbal and emotional abuse were horrific and, no, I did not turn out ok -- I've had a lifelong battle with depression.

I doubt that a swat on the butt will destroy a kid, but what I would call "formal" spanking is not something anyone but Christian Grey should be doing. The physical pain might be fleeting, but the humiliation will last.

Could you find me one of those studies? Cause I would love to read it!
The study I referred to was a meta-analysis of 88 studies on corporal punishment.
I guess you can find a study that supports anything. But in research there is a thing called consensus. And the consensus on corporal punishment has been that it isn't effective.

And just to be clear...I'm not claiming either Matt or Jane's experiences aren't true. Not everyone who is exposed to corporal punishment suffers harmful effects.
But like Robbie says if we can't be sure where the line can be drawn then it's best not to draw the line.

I don't have to find any study. I simply said there are all kinds of studies out there which support all kinds of theories.

Planned beatings and other atrocities that have been described here are what I consider to be corporal punishment. One pat on the derriere, no.

I would never strike my baby parrot. EVER.

On an airplane I think the correct response would be asking the mother to take the child outside for a breather. Is Corporal Punishment In Any Context Ever Jusitifed?

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

In this context Corporal Punishment is center-justified.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
