I've also heard it's terrible - which is a shame - I adored the book and I am incredibly anxious to see the movie. I was opposed to Hanks in the beginning, but then seeing him in the trailers sort of made me feel better.
I, too, had Harrison Ford in mind.

Mister Matt --- Tom Wilkinson = great choice!
Here's my problem. I'm only half-joking about a musical.
For the past year, we've seen over a dozen cable channel specials unravelling, revealing, decoding, unveiling and gang-raping the Da Vinci Code myths. On our TVs and on the video shelves. There have been elaborate reenactments, and great location shoots. Expert historians, theologians and best-selling authors. The only thing left is Rachel Ray's recreation of a 30-minute last supper "Da Vinci" style, and the only way to get her recipe is to "unlock the code."
So by this point, when I walk into a multiplex to see this movie, they'd better give me a rousing tap number by quarter past the hour... because I've pretty much SEEN everything else there is on the subject.

Here. I don't think the above link is working for some reason..
"The feeling moved quickly from one of great anticipation to one of, shockingly, great boredom...instead of the film building to a white knuckle conclusion, it was the audience fidgeting as Da Vinci passed the two-hour mark and unveiled the first of its half-dozen endings...by the time the big climactic moment of the film finally arrived, the audience burst out laughing, as if this were yet another classic bit of Tom Hanks comedy. As the credits rolled, not a single bit of applause was heard." [FilmStew]

I'm not that excited. I work at a movie theatre and we will have Da Vinci Code this Friday. My thoughts are that the 40+ million people who bought the book have the potential to give it to 40+ million friends. I'm not looking forward to the potential crowds this weekend. MI3 did worse than I thought...but Da Vince Code has a whole new Tom. Oy.
Plus, I kind of want to see a group of people protesting. Just so I don't go crazy as I sell tickets.
But, to those of you who do go see it, hope you enjoy!

I pictured Pierce Brosnan as Langdon, Sophie Marceau as Sophie, Chris Eccleston (Dr. Who) as Silas and Jean Reno as Fache (so at least I got one!).
I liked the plot of the book and I'm fascinated by the theories it suggests, but I thought the writing was amateurish and the ending was hokey. (Not as hokey as "Angels And Demons" though.) I had hoped the movie would actually improve on the book. I predict at the very least it will be very visually appealing but my expectations are low for everything else.

To each his own. The NY Post critic gave it four stars. I'll see it and decide for myself.
RON Howard's splendid "The Da Vinci Code" is the Holy Grail of summer blockbusters: a crackling, fast-moving thriller that's every bit as brainy and irresistible as Dan Brown's controversial bestseller.

Posted: 5/17/06 at 10:22pmHow good could it be? The "startling" revisionist New Testament history is now so well known (yawn) -- even among those who've not cracked the book -- so an audience must sit throught all that boilerplate suspense stuff, without any real payoff. Maybe it'll be thrilling for some, but as far as book adaptations go, give me ROSEMARY'S BABY or THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST.

"How good could it be?"
Considering Ron Howard's track record; not very. I always thought he was a mediocre filmmaker, at best. None of his films bowl me over. But I'll see it anyway. Its slim pickins this summer.

Daily News gave it 4 stars. I believe it is getting a cool reception @ Cannes
It will clean up at the box office no matter what

In my head, it was Harrison Ford.
I was thinking the same thing.
I'm disappointed in these reviews. Then again, other than Apollo 13, I haven't really cared for anything that Ron Howard has done.
I've heard that Ian McKellen and Paul Bettany are the best things about it.

The Times' review basically confirms the snooze factor. But will real fans care if it is?
What's depressing to me is how bad movies are that open between Mary and September. I think it's one reason CRASH took off at this time last year -- it had an actual thought behind it, and it was designed for adults.

Never read the book but my wife did
She loved it & thought it followed the book as closely as she could remember. I thought it was a good way to spend a few hours in a movie. Not worthy of Best Picture though

For those who pictured Harrison Ford as Langdon: Dan Brown describes Langdon in the book as a Harrison Ford lookalike.
And the radical Christians were up-in-arms when the book came out.

Paul Bettany is a great reason to see this. The only thing is that he doesn't have the red eyes in the movie. But that's ok.
Kelzama, one of the lines is "...Harrison Ford in Harris tweed".

I might be in the minority on this (although it doesn't sound like many of you have actually seen it), but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was fun. (And yes, it was very pretty looking.) I don't understand why people are saying that it is so bloody awful- it's certainly decent. Like I said, I really liked it. (And I was no great fan of the book. The book had an interesting premise, but was not well-written.)

I, too, read the book (very early on, way before the hype), and found it a fun, fast read, but extremely poorly written. I have no interest in seeing the movie.
I also pictured Harrison Ford as Langdon (and yes, that would be because Dan Brown actually describes him that way in the book), but I knew he'd be too old... I think Hugh Laurie's a great idea! And although I adore Paul Bettany, I also think Chris Eccleston as Silas would've been genius.
