I'm not really into American remakes of Japanese horror films but this one is directed by Walter Salles so I'm not sure...
Well, it has Jennifer Connelly and John C. Reilly, which is good.
But it's a horror movie, which is bad.
I'd say it's about 50/50.
Well, they've done a pretty good job with the trailer about not telling you anything aabout the plot whatsoever which is really annoying. I mean, they don't tell you like anything about the dark water, just that it's there. That intrigues me, but also bugs the crap out of me. Let me just say that the itsy bitsy spider singing gave me goosebumps for some reason. Just like Silent Night after seeing parts of Black Christmas, lol.
I think I'm seeing it tonight...it's the Jennifer Connelly love in me, but I hate horror movies...so here I go. I'll let you know what I think
Well, I didn't think the original was any good, so I don't know that an American remake is going to make me think differently. But then having said that, I hated Ringu but really liked The Ring.
Saw it today, and enjoyed it very much.
Jennifer Connelly is brilliant. That's all I can say. There are very few actresses in Hollywood who can express mental deterioration better than she can. This is some of her best work yet, and it's a shame that she will be forgotten come award time. There are also good supporting performances by John C. Reilly, Tim Roth, and Pete Posthelwaite.
The real surprise is Ariel Gade, playing Connelly's daughter. She has more than enough charm, presence, maturity, and talent to give Haley Joel Osment, Dakota Fanning, Cameron Bright, and Co., a run for their money.
There are many scenes in "Dark Water" that are sensationally creepy. The kind of stuff that warrants nightmares. The cinematography and score are first-class, as is the direction by Walter Salles. The suspense culmulates in a climax that doesn't make sense... and yet it does. I did get the feeling that there were some pieces of the mystery missing. Either way, due to the efforts of Gade and Connelly, the film has resonance. I'd say it's worth seeing.

It seems nobody cares, 86.
My 14 year old son went and was indifferent. I know, adolescents are in "whatever" mode. But he's predisposed to invest in the genre, and though he touted the look of the movie and the atmosphere (not with those words), he was let down, particularly by the end. Of course, his real taste is 28 DAYS LATER, so perhaps he's a tough audience. (Speaking of which -- 28 DAYS... is on cable these days, and remains a stunner. Anyone who hasn't seen this, don't miss it. It's a kind of classic.)
I just realized--we have 14 year olds posting here. No offense, gang.
I saw it last night.
Jenniffer Connelly really is a God. Everything she does is just so RIGHT and REAL, and Dark Water is no exception.
I agree, her daughter was sensational!
I've always loved John C. Reilly so there you go.
The movie altogether was REALLY creepy but if you could sit through The Ring you can certainly sit through this. It's good stuff!
"It seems nobody cares, 86."
Awww.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, SallyBrown.
Creepiest scene in the ENTIRE movie: "The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout."....... "Down came the rain and washed the spider out..."
If Broadway86 liked it very much, that means I will find it lame. Horror movies can only be truly scary if what is happening in the film could actually happen - and based on the trailers of this one - that's not the case.
As far as horror movies in general, the only one I found to be frightening and suspensful was SAW - terrible acting, but an interesting enough story. And I actually liked HOUSE OF WAX, until the final scene.
Regardless, I will see DARK WATER anyway - I see everything.
Broadway - Interested in your opinion on HIGH TENSION.
Munk-
I never (not once) said it was scary. I said it was creepy. There is a difference. The film was very much about the atmosphere. As for all horror movies needing to be realistic, I don't find that to be the case. Either way, we disagree on everything, so you probably will not like it.
As for "High Tension"... Some good parts, but the ending was very... weak, to say the least.
I never said you said it was scary either, I was just making a statement.
I had such high hopes. Sadly to say, I was thoroughly disappointed. I never delivered. I kept on waiting for something... and nothing happened. And I HATED the ending.
Jennifer Conelly was amazing, and so was the daugthter, but overall the film left me feeling empty.
I am a big horror fan, but have been disappointed by many horror films of late, such as the Ring (parts 1 & 2) and The Grudge. This Genre of turning Japanese horror films into American made ones, actually sucks, because the Japanese don't know how to scare the living crap out of you, nor does it work in translation. (I must admit the final five minutes of The Ring was the only part of the movie that i actually liked - which wasn't in Ringu)). Also, many of these films have missing pieces, and it seems questionable when you leave the theatre. Did they delete certain things that will be on the DVD? Again, in the Ring, what was the signifigance of Sarah Rue's character, and is she in any other scene?
I wanted to see this (Dark Waters)movie, but what terrifies me most is whether or not I'll be walking out of the theatre disappointed. It has happened one too many times with horror films of recent (Darkness Falls, White Noise) - it seems the better ones are the remakes...with the Amityville Exception.
Also, I know there are many Jennifer Connoly fans out there, but I have despised her as an actress since Career Opportunities (I won't count Labyrinth, because the film is good enough to hide her bad acting). I even gave her a chance in the Hulk, but both that film and her performance (along with Eric Bana's and John Woo's) were attrocious.
This is one that I will wait for On Demand.
From what I hear... it's more of a sad movie than a scary movie.

Bottom line: If you are a fan of Connelly, her performance is worth the ticket price. She is phenomenal.
