Posted: 6/7/07 at 9:05amI saw the trailer for the new Adam Sandler film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Buck or whatever the name of this...um...fabulous looking film is and noticed the Mickey Rooney character from Breakfast at Tiffany's performing the wedding ceremony. Or was that Martin Short? Is it part of the plot that the person is obviously a Caucasian pretending to be Asian? What are these people thinking? Now I have not seen the whole film, obviously, but based on the preview this looks like it might just be the most offensive film ever made.

Posted: 6/7/07 at 9:10amThe most offensive film ever made is the highly anti-Semitic and even more homophobic Milo and Otis

Posted: 6/7/07 at 9:13amI know it is not really him, but the character he played in Breakfast, considered by many to be one of the most offensive racial performance in film history, seems to be making an appearance in this movie.

It has a very pro-gay theme and and is not nearly as offensive as you may think.
This from reviews of early critic screenings.

I've actually heard this whole movie is cringe-inducing. It's supposedly full of hideous stereotypes.
But I haven't seen it, and I don't plan to.

It could be B12B. The review I read was from AICN a while ago.
It's possible that it can have negative stereotypes and still be well meaning.
I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion on the matter once more people see it though.

Posted: 6/7/07 at 9:25amTaz, I was actually just reading about it and it does indeed sound as if it might be a PRO-gay film. But you would NEVER tell that from the trailer where it is all homophobic paranoia and ickiness. Obviously they are marketing this to the straight Adam Sandler fans. Add to that the horribly offensive minister...one of the most uncomfortable TRAILERS I have ever had the displeasure to sit through. Now if they pull a bait and switch and make fun of their target audience once they fork over their money, good for them.

So must also be okay if we put on a full minstrel show then, with black-face and all the trimmings... as long as we say "African Americans are people too" by the end of our movie?
Don't think so.

#13re: Is Mickey Rooney in I Now Pronounce You...?
Posted: 6/7/07 at 9:42amI think the proper term for Rooney and RobbO is "has-been".

Rooney's been a has-been for about 65 years.
RobbO is still quite entertaining.

In all fairness "The Birdcage" had horrible stereotypes too. But it had a very pro-gay message.
Sadly, at this point in time when it comes to mainstream media I think we have to take what we can get in terms of getting acceptance as a message out there. Sure, it's offensive to US, but if it makes people in the fly-over states a little more aware that bigotry is silly, then that's not all bad, is it?

But the premise is preposterous. (I know, it is an Adam Sandler flick, but even still.) James' character wants to make sure that his motherless kids are the beneficiaries if something happens to him so he has to "marry" a MAN? Come on...

Posted: 6/7/07 at 10:18amBest, I understand the theory of comedy, but since Gay Marriage is such a hot topic that is a clear sign of this country's blatant homophobia I find it a bit offensive to make it seem that the best way out of this is for him to "marry" a man. Now a REAL comedy might make Sandler dress as a woman in order to get the benefits. THAT might be funny. This just seems as if it is making light of the Gay Marriage issue.
