I think it depends on what position.
" Especially when it is a forced expression of a vain ego."
Forced? vain ego? Please explain your statement.
BTW-wouldn't "vain ego" be pleonastic?

In order to answer the question "Is pornography art?" we first have to define art, and defining art is as hard as answering the question what is the meaning of life.
The debate is never settled.
we also have to define Pornography, which is just as slippery. *cough* but I guess the general consensus now is that they are opposites.
If you can throw it against the wall and it sticks, it's art.
If it slides off onto the floor, it's porn.
puttanesca
I've been to that restaurant before!
Too noisy.
Bestie prefers his restaurants whore-free.
Who says?
I just prefer them quiet.
pasta puttanesca means whore's pasta.

art is anything that is created. Period. By man
So before you flush the toilet, do you say "wow, what a piece of art I've created!"
If you say it's art, it's art.

"So before you flush the toilet, do you say "wow, what a piece of art I've created!"
That's right-if you don't think I've seen this displayed in a gallery before, you have another think coming!
and it didn't belong to the gallery dog either!
This thread stinks.
LOL, like most of the art I see these days!
I think we can all agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But historically speaking, something doesn't become art until a group of wealthy, influential and manipulative folks invest money in it.

Whatever Art may be, we can reasonably assume that Cruel Sandwich has never been meaningfully exposed to it.

However, I think we can reasonably assume that he has been exposed to pornography.
It just doesn't seem to have helped.
Well, I guess we agree on one point since I never said that.
Jane2 - Forgive me. That comment was not directed specifically at you.

I'm speaking of those "artists" (and they are out there, because I've met them), who believe simply because they placed a crayon on a piece of sheet metal that it is art because they say so. My reply is usually, "In that case, it is not art because I say so".
BTW-wouldn't "vain ego" be pleonastic?
It depends on the ego. Some are large, some are small. Some egos can be large, but be supported with reasonable evidence, such as a successful career or superior intelligence or talent. I specified a "vain ego" as the superficial conceit to one's sense of self.
Thanks for giving the explanation, Matt.
See, I think" vain ego" is redundant. Anyway, oy, this topic is so complex! Anyway, we got away from the question "is pornography art," to what is art? So, in reference to the egotistic artists you mentioned, IMO what they produce is still art. Just as a timid churchmouse artist is making art.
I'm a purist on this topic, I know. But I really do still maintain my very simplistic definition of art. Take my students-Please!!! LOL. No, seriously, let's take a second grade class for instance. I give them an art lesson. I motivate them, using art prints, a little art history, and then I try to tie the concept in with their real lives. What they then produce is art, in my opinion. Some of the students will actually create something very good, but of course the percentage of gifted artists in any given class is going to be very small. However, I'm going as far as to say that even the untalented students have produced art. It may not be good, but it's their art. I gave them the materials and the spoken motivation, and they produced something.
That's how simple and pure my idea of art is.
if our resident useless sandwhich is watching it, it's most definitely NOT art.
