I wanted to tell him how much his music means to me, but I realized I'd probably break down in tears, so I just smiled and asked him to sign something.
I think Elegies is my most-played CD in my iTunes. So, so, SO good.

A New Brain is mine.
I'm playing Infinite Joy now and crying as Norm Lewis sings "Anytime".
Literally crying.

Posted: 7/13/08 at 3:42amI love "Anytime," but for me it has to be Carolee. She's just so ****ing brilliant, especially in Bill Finn's stuff. He needs to write her a show to headline... now. Kthxbai.

Posted: 7/13/08 at 3:50amYou mean Carolee Carmello? I just watched an old Rosie O'Donnell clip from '99 when she performed "All The Wasted Time" with Brent Carver. Like 5 minutes ago. Eerie.

Here's the clip of Carolee Carmello and Brent Carver singing "All The Wasted Time" on THE ROSIE O'DONNELL SHOW back in 1999.

The only time I've seen Carolee was in LESTAT.
I'll leave this discussion to those who know better.

Posted: 7/13/08 at 4:23amI've actually never seen her live at all, so I'm not really in the know either. Was she any good in Lestat?

Count me in as a Finn fan, particularly partial to A New Brain. I love it and can't get enough. Right now I am trying to woo a protege of his (a friend of mine) to become composer to my lyricist.

A New Brain is probably his most accessible work. It's a semi-autobiographical story about a guy who has to have brain surgery... but it's totally peppy and hilarious. "Heart and Music" is one of those songs I play whenever I'm feeling depressed and it fixes it. "Sailing" and "And They're Off" are two of my other favorites.
Elegies: A Song Cycle is probably my favorite of his works. It... well, is what it sounds like, a series of songs written about people he's known in his life, and they range from hilarious to absolutely heartbreaking. My only warning is that a few of my favorite songs ("Only One" and "Infinite Joy" come to mind) are sung by Betty Buckley, who, though she emotes her way through songs wonderfully, can have some extremely annoying vibrato at times.
His sort of magnum opus, so to speak, is Falsettos. It was the Broadway show that actually combined two one-act musicals he did off-broadway, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland. It's the story of Marvin, a man who leaves his wife for a man and tries to maintain his relationship with his son (and then, not to spoil anything, but... bad things happen). It's almost entirely sung through, ridiculously catchy, and so... I don't know, emotionally real.
And... that's a start!

Indeed! Thanks, Sammy. Now, if only the OBCR fairy would help me out, I could really get started . . .

Scott your post reminded me to start a thread on the main board that I've been meaning to do for sometime. I am pretty sure I didn't explain it properly though. Oh well.

*ahem* Mauri, PMs.
And Akiva, I saw that. I was going to respond, but then I really couldn't think of that many composers I care about enough to try to ease people into. I think your Sondheim example is perfect, though. (And I have to admit, I actually don't even know Pacific Overtures myself.)
