~ i'm a firm believer that whatever your circumstances you always have a choice to rise above it and make something better for yourself, if you really want it.
~ i'm also a firm believer that many don't want to or care to and are so used to the conditions/circumstances they live in that they get comfortable and use that as an excuse for their behavior.
~ aaron hernandez was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
but he was given opportunities many kids in the inner city wished they had, he was living "the dream", he was in a position to make a difference, to be a positive influence and role model especially within the hispanic community and it's maddening that he literally just pissed it all away.
~ on august 22nd, he was indicted on a first-degree murder charge. his arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 6th at 2 p.m.
~ he is currently being held in jail -- solitary confinement no less -- after being arrested in June for the murder of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-professional football player who was acquaintances with Hernandez.
~ he is also suspected of being involved in one other murder and an attempted murder of a friend in Florida
~ in light of all this an investigative report in the new issue of Rolling Stone dives deep into the personal and professional life of Aaron Hernandez, and the findings aren’t pretty.
Here are the six revelations provided by the magazine:
Hernandez was a heavy user of angel dust, and had become so paranoid over the last year that he carried a gun wherever he went.
He surrounded himself with a cohort of gangsters, and cut himself off from his family and teammates.
Hernandez had so infuriated his head coach, Bill Belichick, with missed practices and thug-life stunts, that he was one misstep from being cut.
Both his parents, Dennis and Terri, had criminal records, as did much of his extended family.
Terri allegedly cheated on Dennis before his death with a violent drug dealer named Jeffrey Cummings, then married Cummings after Dennis died and moved him into the house she shared with Aaron.
In college his coach (then-University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer) may have helped cover up failed drug tests, along with two violent incidents — an assault and a drive-by shootout outside a local bar.
~ if anyone here is following this, i would love to read your thoughts.

Living in New England, you really can't get away from the information.
I'm not sure that the info about his parents (other than the records they have) has anything to do with this.
My personal WTF moments: the players union is actively helping Hernandez collect some $82,000 in monies from the Patriots. (The logical part of me understands the precedent -- but really????)

I think the information about his parents will somehow be used in the defense.

He's an adult. Get over it. I don't see how remarrying after your spouse dies is such a big deal. Unless the drug dealer boyfriend KILLED the father.

@ dramamama: i agree that the nfl players union is technically doing the right thing in pursuing the monies owed hernandez but in light of all that has happened they should just drop it.
~ as far as his parents background is concerned, they may very well bring that into focus and use it as an "excuse" for his behavior, although i myself think it may have contributed, he is an adult and he was given an opportunity to change and make a better life for himself.
~ the man committed murder, is alleged to be involved in another and in a fit of rage shot another man in the face point blank...that guy lost an eye.
@ millie_dillmount: i think they are investigating the depth of his participation in that second murder.
~ the man he shot in florida i believe has filed charges against him.

Right...TECHNICALLY, I get it. The money they seem to be talking about seems like money already earned type stuff.
Tebow and he have a relationship from florida. He (supposedly) helped keep him focused in college, and some of the rumors flying around the Pats hiring Tebow suggest they hoped he could do the same here.
I really applaud the Pats for severing ties with him as quickly as they did. Did you know they did an exchange day where you could swap your Hernandez paraphenalia with ANY other players stuff. (Only over one weekend, but still.)
I believe there is MORE than one additional murder they are investigating.

~ okay that right there is news to me.
~ i did hear about the opportunity the pats gave fans to trade in their hernandez paraphenalia. and they absolutely did the right thing in severing their times with him. it would have been extremely detrimental to their image if they hadn't.
~ hernandez has let down so many: his team, his coaches, his community, his family and himself.
~ the guy is literally a monster.
~ he might as well be the corner thug in the 'hood. and in a sense he was. he just happened to play football as well.
~ and the sad part of it is that this gangster life style is so glorified and held in such high regard by many in the inner city, especially in low income neighborhoods and because it is glorified many kids in these very neighborhoods aspire to it. they see the bling, the girls, the money, the cars and that's what they want and they'll do anything to attain it.

~ you make a good point papa.
~ i read somewhere that the ray lewis case and how it was handled is being re-visited because of how the patriots quickly dismissed hernandez.

Posted: 8/28/13 at 10:02amI am really into the Urban Meyer angle. College coaches are almost never disciplined even if their checkered history in ethics often leaves their programs on shaky ground. Usually the coach gets of scot-free. It doesn't help that the NCAA as the governing body is also beyond corrupt and really ought to be disbanded. But to keep on point, Meyer is at Ohio State and you wonder if the school wants to keep **this guy** as the face of their program.

strummer - I think the guy is a worm but he has never been officially linked to any misconduct in the NCAA. And, because he's a winning coach, the boosters and school administration love him as the 'face' of the program. No way do they stir the pot at this point. Too much money, money, money riding on him!
And that's really the essence of why the NCAA is so corrupt. It's not about the students, or friendly collegiate competition, or academics. It's 'all about the benjamins, baby.'

And the Johnny Manziel case is why the NCAA is monstrously absurd...
Also, here's info on dramamama's mention of other murders:
Aaron Hernandez now also probed in 2012 double homicide

What's funny is that he could have had those things based on his career alone. He didn't need to do what he did.

strummergirl, as an ohio state buckeye homer, yes, we do want to kleep urban meyer as the face of the program. why? because his spread with braxton miller at the helm is going to take us to the national championship this year and we will end the sec's reign of terror at the top.
urban would still be at florida - where his team brutally beat out buckeyes for the national championship - had he chosen to stay. the guy can write his own ticket in college football.
it's not like he's a pedophile f*cking little kids in the showers and being corvered for like at penn state. sheesh.

My husband went to Michigan. We are officially foes now, papa.
Also, Braxton is talented in the spread but needs to mature a bit with his passing skills. Not that I profess to know what your receivers are like this season; I know O State lost a couple good ones this past year, I believe?

(Of course, we root for the Patriots because the grandkids live in Mass.)
