Is it worth it? Living in NYC — Page 2

I've always felt safe taking public transit home from the shows. I feel safe enough to take groups of my high school students with me all the time as well, and we've never had a problem.

Over the past few years, mass transit crime in NY has plummeted. It does happen, but again, NYC's crime rate is as low as it was in the early 1960's---the safest big city in the USA.

And that's the same exact thing I dont miss about living in Chicago.....after a night out: you gotta find where you parked, pay for parking, drive home dodging the drunk drivers, the trucks, the potholes, the construction, red lights, pedestrians, gotta make sure you have enough gas, drive all your friends home........it just never ends with the car culture! Thank God I live here where I dont have to ever deal with cars : )

I commute into the city everyday for work and the monthly train pass, plus the fee to use the parking garage at the train station is something like $330 bucks a month. I could use that money towards an apartment in the city, but it would cost so much more to actually be able to pay for that apartment. For me if I want to do something in the city, it'll usually be on a Friday night (Because I won't have to get up at 6 to get to work the next day) or I'll come in on the weekends. I'll probably get sick of the commute within a year and just move into the city, but the point is by then I'll have saved up enough money to make the transition comfortably.

I am from a small town just outside of West Philadelphia. I moved to Denver in 1991 and thought I would miss the city. (I lived in downtown Philly for a while). I fell in love with Denver and have been here ever since. The slower pace, the Rocky mountains and the people kept me here. Also the cost of living is much lower than than Philly or New York. But lately I have been itching to move back east. Preferably to NYC. I have been back to NYC several times since living here and decided that I am ready to take on big city living again. Now in my 40's I realized that I don't have to do the rat race thing. I can live in the city on my own terms, so to speak. I think I can be just as relaxed there as I am here. When I visit NYC, I stay for a span of 6 to 9 days at a time. I have purposely taken the subway at rush hour just to see if it would bother me and it didn't. (Rush hour in Philly was just as bad) and I priced food and apts. I think the cost of living is the thing that has kept me here, but I do plan to relocate back east within the next few years. I just feel like I have to. NYC is calling my name. And one 2 of the main reasons I want to relocate are Family (in PA) and the Theatre. We have great theatre out here, but it isn't NY theatre.

Yep, that's the plus to having a car in New Jersey. You don't have to do the dirty work yourself.

Yeah, the highest I saw today was $3.33, but the way it has been going up, it wouldn't surprise me if it is higher now. I swear, I went out one day for an hour, and in that hour, the gas prices at 1 station rose like 10 cents. It's rediculous.
