I don't really have an opinion one way or another on Jackson, I think he's probably disturbed and needs help, but I don't know for sure what he's really guilty of. However, the parents in the scenario really trouble me. If something really did happen to these children then that's terrible, but honestly, I really wonder what the hell the parents were thinking, especially considering that the possibility of Jackson being a pretty troubled individual has been out there for over 10 years.
As far as general crimes against children or kidnappings or all those kinds of situations, I feel sorry for every parent and child who has to go through that kind of situation, but honestly, so many of these situations are preventable.
For every parent who is doing a great job their are many who really need to get their act together. Know where your child is, know who they're with, know who's picking them up after school, know if the way they're walking home from school is well lit and not out of the way of neighbors and people who can see them if someone approaches them. It's not that hard to keep someone from being kidnapped or abducted. Obviously, these things do happen, but they are always going to happen, so people have to be prepared.
I keep reading about communities trying to ban sex offenders and I can understand the knee-jerk reaction, but it's not going to solve the problem. There are always going to be people out there who haven't committed a crime yet, but will, and besides that, many people who abuse children are family members or people the kids already know. Banning sex offenders seems like a lazy reaction instead of using the sex offender registry for what it's intended for, to keep yourself aware of the people who may be around you and your family just incase.
People really need to talk to their children about the dangers of the world so that when they're old enough to not be watched all the time they'll make good choices and not end up in horrible situations that we keep reading about every day.
End of rant.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
