WB hopes to grow up with its fans

LOS ANGELES - WB, the network that "Dawson's Creek" built, is growing up.

"We don't want to be seen as this, you know, teenage network," WB Chairman Garth Ancier told reporters Friday.

"We have established ourselves as the network for 12- to 24-year-olds," said Ancier, "and our goal is to be the network for 25- to 35-year-olds as well.

"We program to everybody."

The 10-year-old network is attempting to lure viewers who may actually be old enough to vote with a slate of new shows in development from veteran producers including David E. Kelley ("Boston Legal"), Tom Fontana ("Oz") and Jerry Bruckheimer (whose company produces CBS' "CSI" gold mine).

"Halley's Comet," from Kelley, centers on a young medical school student. WB Entertainment President David Janollari described the show as "Felicity" meets "Ally McBeal."

Fontana's New York-set series looks at the lives of the students and faculty at a city university. The Bruckheimer project is about an aging misanthropic and not particularly successful attorney who partners with a young idealistic lawyer.

The network has also greenlighted a project from "X Files" veteran David Nutter and McG ("Charlie's Angels"). "Supernatural" has two brothers traveling the highways and byways chasing otherworldly entities.

Even actresses "of a certain age" have found a home on WB. Hollywood icon Faye Dunaway is among the celebrity judges in the network's reality series "The Starlet," which has 10 young women competing for a spot in the limelight - actually a guest shot on the network's "One Tree Hill" and a development deal with Warner Bros. The series premieres March 8 at 9 p.m.

And Fran Drescher makes her sitcom comeback in April in "Living with Fran," which has the erstwhile "Nanny" shacking up with a guy half her age and about the same age as her son.

Speaking of May/December romances, Demi Moore's boyfriend Ashton Kutcher is developing a reality series for the network, "Beauty and the Geek."

"We pair really intelligent young men with really attractive wonderful women who may not quite have the same capability," said Janollari.

Meanwhile, he prospects for a second term for the critically praised "Jack & Bobby" look good, according to Janollari.

"We're determined to make the show work," he said. "It's a giant favorite of the network's. We have to give it time to find an audience."

I think that this show is pretty interesting to watch... but I don't like how random people come up from the "future" and talk. It bothers me. I like watching the show without interupptions. But they have lessened it down... did you know that the mother "Allison Janney" was nominated for a Golden Globe? Now she is nominated for something else too, I forget... but she looked really pretty at the Golden Globes.
