re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

Wrong argument to use with many Bush supporters. They don't give a flying you-know-what about what people in other countries think about them, because YOU DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!

Or something.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

I agree with robbie, papa--you are stretching this pretzel to death to defend him and, yes, ckeaton, this is a VERY crucial issue. Remember that during the Cold War, 7 minutes would have been crucial timing for the President. If terrorists were to get ahold of nuclear weapons and launch them, we would need the President to react IMMEDIATELY--not sit around and wait for the U.S. to get microwaved. This isn't far fetched in relation to 9/11 as for many hours the country was in fear that there were going to be more attacks--by plane or other. Plus, they spent the rest of the morning and afternoon flying around the country as it was feared that Air Force One was a target.

Or are you implying, papa, that Dubya isn't really needed in the decision process?

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

an inbound ballistic missile track i think might have caused a slightly different reaction. heat blooms registered on satellites as denoting a launch i think would have caused a different reaction. a mushroom cloud or the threat or indication of a nuclear attack might would have caused a different reaction.

the first defense in the case of the president in he event of an attack on the homeland is mobility which is why he can communicate with any and all branches of the military and civilian government from air force one. once on that plane he might as well be in the situation room of the white house.

well, jrb, a lot of the decision process is set up for exactly that reason to be able to continue to function in the event that the president and or the vp is incapacitated. would you rather everything in the country stopped while they figured out who's in charge? do you really think that's a possibility?

But, papa, Bush wasn't told, "we have planes". He was told, "America is under attack."

Listen, if you are really, truly satisfied and believe what you are saying, then right on, brother.

But, I'm not buying it for one second.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

And the President wasn't incapacitated. There was no doubt who was (or should have been in charge) that day. Get up out of the room, get in a car and get to the f*ckin plane. And in the meantime, grab a godd*mn cellphone from one of your secret service agents and try to call someone...anyone...dick, condi, rummy...SOMEONE!

That said, I do agree that it's not the most crucial (in)action he's ever undertaken. There are MANY more reasons to not only feel he is not worthy of another for years, but also to HATE his administration.

I'm still flummoxed by the lack of curiosity! I mean...someone comes up to me and whispers 'America is under attack', my first reaction would not be, 'Oh...I'm sure it's being taken care of...now where were we?'

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

from where are we gonna watch the election night coverage in november, guys?

i want to watch as your heads explode when state after state gets colored red. speaking of the red/blue thing how is it that the traditional color associated with comunism and leftist causes (red) is assigned to the republican party? what braniac came up with that?

robbie, we're going to have to agree to disagree. i'm not going to convince you that he was not a complete idiot that day and you're not going to make me think he was. it's an impasse.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

Ah...but you have me all wrong, my elephantine friend!

I, unlike everyone here, refuse to believe he's an idiot. It's too easy to dismiss him.

Coward...maybe. I also have a theory that those seven minutes shaped his policy since then. I think those seven minutes in which he was paralyzed by fear rankled him to the core. And in response, he felt he needed to grow a big metaphorical d*ck and prove that he's a man.

Just a theory...and far fetched. But since we're baking pretzels, I thought I might as well put on an apron.

love,

I think you're going to be proved wrong, Papa. I think we're going to see a surprising number of blue states and a Kerry electoral landslide. Wahoo.

nah, it's going to either be a squeaker or a bush romp.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

I don't think you could ever say it's going to be a Bush romp.
And I was just flabbergasted over and over at the strange comments he kept making last night...like record funding for education initiatives. Really funny, as my friend who works in a very low-income junior high school remarked to me how they got saddled with some of the provisions of NO Child Left Behind and saw their federal funding drop while not getting a single penny for No Child. Lies, lies, all lies.
I also see that our unemployment fell...to the lowest point since Sept 11. Not since his "reign" began.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

but, bway, i just did. it's easy, you just form the words and say 'em. it's even easier to type them.

if last night's response from kerry was indicative of the campaign to follow, i'd say it will be quite a romp. when i say romp i'm talking 7%-15% popular vote margin which in this polarized year would be quite a feat.

I'm with papa on this...though I think it's gonna be a squeaker and not a romp for either party.

I'm just hoping that the Repubs keep bringing out Zell 'Mothra' Miller.

I'm convinced two little Asian girls are on call 24/7 in order to sing Miller out of his cocoon.

I can't wait for a debate. If Kerry learns one lesson from the Gore Campaign, it's to take the battle directly to Bush. He can't debate his way out of a paper bag,

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

i doubt it, robbie, they're already distancing themselves from zellsy as his abscence from the presidential box last night denotes. although, i really can't imagine poppy bush being able to stomach sitting next to him after the '92 speech at the dnc (which was just as ugly as this one except without my favorite line about spitballs). zell served his purpose which was to be a flamethrower against his own party and the unhinged version of ron silver's 9/11 democrats message.

and those asian girls are for me, duh. it's my wife and one of her sisters. sheesh, how'd you miss that?

Do you think Miller was particularly effective? He seemed completely unhinged! It was a HOWL!

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

a little bit about debates.

let's recall that bush was trailing gore in the national polls until after the first debate.

there was this also re-cap of debate #2 from the famously partisan right wing rag, the bbc:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/968191.stm

of course, you can always go to the source and watch them and see for yourself here:

http://www.c-span.org/campaign2000/presdebates.asp

i would suggest that expecting an easy victory in the debates is not such a sure thing. if last night's rejoinder was any indication of what's to come, your guy's in trouble.

i did robbie. he'll hit home with independent voters because he was and is a democrat (no matter what they say and the fact that it was universally despised in the mainstream press won't hurt either) and because he was railing at his own party. it doesn't help that al franken's out there screaming that zell miller is only doing this to drum up sales for his book (which has been out for almost a year already). there's a reason why he kept getting re-elected, robbie. he resonates with a lot of people and not just in his home state. if he can split the so-called "bubba vote" among blue collar workers that are traditionally the domain of pro-union democrats (the only reason why dick gephardt was even considered for a spot on the ticket), it could get ugly quick on nov. 2nd.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

papa... I'm not trying to attack you, just understand where you're coming from. I'm just curious. What exactly has dubya done for you lately? I mean really. What have you gained, or how have you benefited, from his presidancy? Or is it that having him as your president just makes you feel safer? Because I think that's how a lot of people feel. They know we're not better off in any way as a country, or a people, since he took office. He's done nothing to improve the economy, create jobs, improve education, overhaul the healthcare system, improve the enviornment, better our relations with the world-wide community, etc., etc., etc. So if it's just that he makes you feel safer, how so and why? Because he capitalized on 9/11 to instill fear and used it as an opportunity to create a non-existant enemy to go to war with? Because he's not afraid to launch a pre-emptive strike against a third-world country with no WMD's but (and I'm sure it was just a coincidance) plenty of oil! Oh... I know. It must be because you admire him for wanting to liberate the people of Iraq and free them from a tyranical dictator. But then why aren't we bombing North Korea, or Iran, or Saudi Arabia, or any number of other places under a dictatorship, and who also happen to have WMDs? The bottom line for me is... if you like the direction the country is heading and you really think we're better off today than we were four years ago... then go ahead and vote for him. As for me, I'll take my chances with Kerry, thank you very much.

Excerpt from a recent editorial by Gore Vidal:
"Where there is no known Al Qaeda sort of threat, we create one, as in Iraq, whose leader, Saddam Hussein, had no connection with 9/11 or any other proven terrorism against the United States, making it necessary for a President to invent the lawless as well as evil (to use his Bible-based language) doctrine of pre-emptive war based on a sort of hunch that maybe one day some country might attack us, so, meanwhile, as he and his business associates covet their oil, we go to war, leveling their cities to be rebuilt by other business associates."

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

As you know, we see things very differently.

I just kept thinking, 'What the hell is he so angry about??'

Apoplectic is a good word. He seemed angry and more than a touch bitter. Even the most off-message Dem at the Convention, Brother Al, didn't seem that...well...insane. But again, perception is unique to everyone.

And I have a question about Gov. Arnold. You know, I hate the use of the term 'girlie-men.' It's highly offensive for many, many reasons.

But did he actually coin that phrase? I thought it was Dana Carvey. Someone please clear this up for me.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

y'know, when someone says, "i'm not trying to attack you" it generally means that they are about to attack you. it's like a parent saying to a child before spanking them, "this is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you." if you want to know where i'm coming from, curtain, it's not that hard to doa search and discover it. i think i've left a pretty wide trail of positions on this board. i don't feel the need to justify myself to every single soul that asks as i'm one of the few republicans on the board and everytime a new soul joins out merry little band they demand to know how on earth i could support george. if you really want to know, do a little looking. there are some very intersting things to learn on this site of you look a bit (not that i include any of my ramblings in that category, but you could look).

i actually respect more the people who come right out and call me a fascist than those who feel the need to hide behind qualifiers while they try to put me into a pre-made category of their own design. sorry, kiddo, i don't fit.

it was carvey and nealon, robbie. like i said the other day, it takes a certain amount of shall we say chutzpah to take a line that was coined to poke fun at your own intolerance and use it without any shred of irony to poke fun at others and to make it actually work.

re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...

Well papa... I'm sorry you feel that way. I didn't mean to put you on the defensive, but I don't see how anything I said in my last post could be interpreted as a personal attack. I was just expressing my opinion and stating my views, and asking (not demanding) you for yours. But honestly, your last post was about what I expected. No substance whatsoever. You have a lot in common with your boy 'dubya'.

P.S. I'm sorry I'm just a lowly 'stand-by'. One day I hope to be crowned a 'Broadway Legend' like yourself. Maybe then you'll deem me worthy to have a dialogue with. A girl can dream... can't she? re: jamie's take on the 2004 election... Such a welcoming community of individuals!

hey, bway, i don't mind being attacked. good lord, if i did i would have run screaming from this board way back when i was promoting my view of taboo. i just don't like disingenuity (now that ought to give you some ammo re: jamie's take on the 2004 election...), something i've never gotten from you or a lot of the posters here, bway, which is why i point it out when i see it. now, if it's a brawl ya want we gots ta pick a venue. i say we start with a test of wills involving tequila. mrs. mambo can mediate, she's a political neutral unless we're debating south korean foreign policy.

look, curtain, there's a search feature for a reason. use it. unlike politicians i don't like repeating myself. of course my answer was what you expected. anything short of total acquiescence and a political conversion would fit right into your neat little closed minded definition. more power to ya.
