The title itself is bad enough to keep me away despite the reviews, which are all over the place. I haven't read anything about the film that makes me think, "Wow, I wanna see that!"
I've never been a fan of war/military films and can probably only think of three or four I liked at all.

Eh, war movies tend to be quite formulaic and "rah-rah" but the existential approach that this movie is taking interests me.
Why don't you like the title? That's what they call Marines (The Marine haircut makes them look like a jar. Lolz!)

Posted: 11/4/05 at 6:12pmA friend of mine went to an Academy screening. Said it was good but not great, too long and dragged in places. Astonishing performances all round and many shots of Jake's butt though.

Posted: 11/4/05 at 6:18pmThey de-politicized the book for the silver screen, because, you know, neither art nor war are inherently political or anything.

Posted: 11/4/05 at 6:21pmHow was the score? Didn't Thomas Newman do it?

I'm going to see it next week.
The reviews are split down the middle. The negative reviews are scathing, and the positives are glowing. The films supporters (Ebert, etc.) state that the naysayers missed the point.

"...many shots of Jake's butt"
That's a great reason for me to see it !

Posted: 11/4/05 at 7:08pmYea, I haven't read very many good things, but I'm still looking forward to it.

Posted: 11/4/05 at 7:29pmYeah, I knew that it was slang for Marine. But like G.I. Jane, it sounds like the title of a National Lampoon "film" (and I use that term loosely). I'll wait for the DVD release.

Politics. Jake's butt. Politics. Jake's butt. Politics. Jake's...
It's a tough choice, Namo.

It's when they're in the showers. But the lighting is so that you can't see anything. Also, I think they're wearing flesh colored thongs.
Great scene tho. It has one of the best one-liners of the movie.

Posted: 11/5/05 at 9:57amI believe that flesh colored thongs were standard issue in the First Gulf War. As were Lee Press-On Nails for R+R.

this certainly is not a "war flick" but more of a coming-of-age story about a 20-year-old boy who joins the marines to "do something" with his life.
only that something turns out to be not what he signed up for. if you're expecting a war movie, this isn't it. if you go to see an entertaining movie (based on a true story) with strong performances by jake gyllenhaal and peter sarsgaard, then you'll get your money's worth. also, the score was tremendous.

I realize this means next to nothing, but Jarhead had one of the best trailers I've seen in a long time. I have no idea when it comes out in the UK but I'll catch it if I can.
ETA- It's not coming here until January. Of course. So I'll just hope it's still in suburbia when I get back to the States.

also, a finely-acted jake g. movie is "moonlight mile" with dustin hoffman and susan sarandon. strong performances in a fine (albeit not terrific) movie.
plus, i'm a sucker for sad movies with conflicted characters in life-changing situations....

I have every intention of renting the movie, getting to the parts with Jake's ass, then watching that part over and over for the 2 some hours the movie is supposed to be...
Sounds like a winner to me :)
