the soundtrack for the film does not come out until december 6. isn't it unusual for a soundtrack to come out AFTER a movie - not to mention over a month later?

I was basically guilted into going to see this movie by my husband because I'm not much of a "war movie" kinda girl. There are too many scenes where the soldiers leave their families behind that make me cry like crazy and basically ruin the whole thing for me. This movie is not a "war movie" the only similarity is that it takes place during war time. As someone else said this is more of a coming of age story. There is alot of character development throughout the whole film that leaves you going "wow" at the end of the film. You see people change so dramatically from one extreme to the other that it makes you appreciate the hell that people go through in the military, especially in times of war.

Another perk of course is Jake in nothing but a strategically placed santa hat and boots. re: Jarhead-Anyone seen it?

Saw it tonight. Not even worth a full review - terribly disappointing. About nothing. Takes itself more seriously than it ever actually is.

Great performances by all - particularly Foxx, Sarsgaard, and Gyllenhall - but nothing could salvage this for me.

I would give it *1/2 out of ****.

It was directed by Sam Mendes, what did you expect?

Not sure what to do with that comment. American Beauty is one of my favorite movies, but I thought that Road to Perdition was terrible.

I didn't get to see Jarhead several nights ago. Instead, I saw The Constant Gardener. Great movie. I'm still seeing Jarhead very soon.

i wasn't sure how i felt about it until talking about it afterwards. i liked what the movie stood for as far as being a coming of age drama about how people's lives don't turn out the way they think they will and oftentimes there's a defining event that sums up their existence.

without giving too much away it is hard to discuss but the fact that not much happened was the point from the way i saw it...

American Beauty is the exception with Mendes direction rather than the rule. Theatre or film, I find him very dull.

Jarhead is bland, boring, non-conflictive crap. Now I know it's not about the action, but there is still conflict w/o gun shooting and all that.

This movie has no conflict. Well, it did, but it was resolved almost instantly and without any consequence.

And I hope a lot of scenes got cut out in the end, because Troy's (Found out his name from IMDb) death had NO point to the movie. None. At all.

I love movies almost as much as I love theatre, but I hated Jarhead.

(And to say something, no one actually dies in war except a camel or two. They don't actually fight their weapons until the end, and then its at the stars.)

LAME attempt to make a war that's not really a war movie.

I love what I've seen of his stage work.

This movie was just BORING.

obvious, i think when you're older you may understand this movie better. it's not a war movie and not about the "conflict" in the gulf - at all.

if you want to write a thesis about the main character's internal conflict and how that mirrors what is going on around him, i think that would be a good idea.

since i'm one of those people who likes to know absolutely zero about a movie when going into it, i won't get into specifcs but i think people's personal experiences and "having lived" serves them well in a movie like this.

i found it to be intelligent, though-provoking and a very telling commentary on life (anticipated [where's life taking me] vs. actual [is this all i'm meant to do?]).

The Donmar version of Cabaret, his swansong of Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya, all deathly.

I wish something would've happened between Troy and Sworff. Something. Either a close friendship (which it wasn't, because Swoff isn't affected by Troys death), or some kind of rivalry.

"I'm the better sharp shooter"
"No, I am"

Something besides what it was. There was no antagonist beyond a camel-beared Kuwaitian.

And anyone else think the beginning was just too Full Metal Jacket?

i've said it before and i'll say it again, if you're going into this movie to see a "war movie" this is not the movie for you.

it's not about war - it's about a boy growing up into a man that is set during a time-period when a war is taking place.

seriously, guys, sometimes you have to dig beneath the surface. everything cannot be laid out for you like a buffet.

I understand it's not a war movie, and I understand its about growing up.

But just growing up isn't a conflict. I want to see him want something and then someone else put a road block in his way. This movie has neither a protagonist or an antagonist. By the end of the movie I didn't care what the hell I just watched, or what the main character did, or didn't do, because neither one was there.

This isn't The Cherry Orchard.

life (or he, himself) is his own antagonist. and i think he very much cared for troy - which can be seen in the branding scene, the scene where he prevents troy from flipping out and again at the end of the movie where his emotions are more readily apparent.

i think gyllenhaal's performance is muted and understated not showy and overblown as many performances can be. that's why the voiceover is so crucial in this movie.

I saw this amazing movie yesterday. Just great. Jamie Fox and Jake G give powerful, award worthy performances. And Sam Mendes has a nack for directing great American stories. THe funniest, and most bearable war movie (and I HATE war movies) I've seen.

I loved it, too. Saw it last night. My brother has been in Iraq for almost a year now. And, from what he's told me about his experience in training and such, it seems very true to life.

I hope Jamie FOx gets another Oscar Nom. He really impressed me in this film, and proved he isn't a 2 trick pony.
