My mom swears she "predicted" Falwell's death. I love my mom, but I am NOT giving her the benefit of doubt this time.

is it that hard to predict the death of a 350 pound septegenarian blowhard that had been severly ill more than once in the last 2 years?

I hope no one was hurt by your posts.

I think your posts sparked a short debate and discussion, but were not received as malicious.

BG, I saw your posts as a young girl who loves her mother so much that she gets flustered and defensive when she perceives that her mom is being "attacked." Your intentions are pure; it's understandable and forgivable.

At the same time, I did not see that anyone was, in fact, "attacking" your mom. Falwell's death has stirred a lot of emotions all the way around, which is also understandable. He used "god" and the premise of "religion" to hurt, alienate, judge, belittle and oppress many, many people. Even those who try NOT to judge others can't help but give in to their emotions now and then. The hurt runs that deep.

I think anyone who knows your mom--and a lot of us do--realize what kind of person she is: a really GOOD one. Just remember that as emotional as you became about someone you love being attacked, so did many of us because Jerry Falwell leaves a trail of discrimination, insult, hatred and, yes, even blood. He was symbolic of everything we "liberals" are working to change, and it has not been an easy battle.
Therefore, emotions run high.

Oh, and by the way, it was sweet of you to come to your mom's defense, but we all know she's a tough COOKIE! re: Jerry Falwell is Dead; There's Not a Wet Eye in the House

One of the cast members in the show I am in sent out an email I thought was perfect.

"My first reaction is to quote Falwell himself: "Praise the Lord!!"

My second thought is that we should sing an appropriate song in his honor: "Ding, Dong, the witch is dead."

As the munchkins sang in that song: He's "gone where the goblins go, below, below below. Yo Ho."

I must pity the people in Hell. The place of eternal damnation has just gotten a lot more crowded as that fat bastard takes up the room.

What about those of us who don't believe in "hell"?

I don't think Falwell is being spit-roasted in eternal damnation.

I like to think of him in my vision of hell: Being trapped forever in a hot, crowded filthy rest stop along the New Jersey Turnpike. (Not that New Jersey deserves such a rotten fate, mind you.)

One man's hell is another man's pleasure.

I know a few folks on this board who would get chills thinking of a dirty NJ rest stop.

I hear you, Matthew, but Jerry Falwell wouldn't like it, and that's all that matters! re: Jerry Falwell is Dead; There's Not a Wet Eye in the House

Statement by Joan Garry, Executive Director, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation:

===

I learned a lot from Jerry Falwell. I debated him on television a number of times. He taught me not to take a breath at the end of my sentences but to grab catch breaths in mid-sentence. That way, the interviewer has a tougher time interrupting. I learned that when you have a title like Reverend, you get some sort of free pass. A free pass to say terrible things and get away with it.

But most importantly I learned that you only get a free pass if people are willing to give it to you. You only get power when people are prepared to relinquish it. You only get a platform when people offer it to you.

As a woman, I have a lot of anger toward Jerry Falwell. I would never have an abortion but believe that a woman has a right to choose. As a gay person, I have a lot of anger toward Jerry Falwell. He raised a good deal of money for his cause, for his "church" on my back. As a Christian, I have a lot of anger toward Jerry Falwell. He used his deeply held religious beliefs as cover for the vast array of statements he made through the years that will reverberate for decades to come.

But as I watch CNN this afternoon (I can't bear to watch Fox), I realize the anger I feel should be directed to all those Mr. Falwell leaves behind -- all of you who created this demagogue. To all those who booked him on a TV or radio show, to all those who put money in his coffers, to all of you who followed him blindly. You gave Falwell the opportunity, the platform, the microphone and the money. He couldn't have done it all without you.

The world lost a powerful bigot today. The question ahead is not who will take his place. Someone will. The question is did you learn anything? Will you recognize that with power comes responsibility. When the next one asks for money or a microphone, maybe you'll think twice. Maybe you'll consider what it really means to be Christian.

"Showing qualities such as kindness, helpfulness, and concern for others."

I heard PJ is leading a search at every rest stop in the country to find Falwell!

As much as I despise GLAAD, that was good.

aslo, if Jerry's gonna be a rest stop, shoudln't it be at one on the L.I.E.? that would be more hellish for him, I'm guessing.

As a lifelong New York City boy who has never owned a car, I am not a Rest Stop Queen, Matthew.

And, yes, Liverpool, I am not a fan of GLAAD either, but Joan rose to this occasion with a good statement, as did Joe Solmonese of HRC and Matt Foreman of NGLTF (which I DO like).

That's one hell of a statement. That sh*t should be on CNN, not this Larry King crap.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali
