Oscar nominated actress, Gabourey Sidibe always wanted to meet Joan Cusack, but when it happened she received some advice that she did not like. Cusack told her she should quit show business because "it's so image-conscious." What do you all think of that advice. I glad that she did not listen to Cusack because Sidibe is very talented.

I'd like to know the full context--I mean exactly what was said. Was she saying that it's hard work and is image conscious? Or did she flat out say "You should quit because with your image you'll hardly find work"? or? Love Joan, but I know she has said in interviews she had a really hard time early on in her career because of repeatedly being told she wasn't pretty enough for any major roles.

To be perfectly honest, Ms.Sidibe has a lot to learn about tact. I'd like to hear Joan's response to this. I'm sure there is another angle.

Sidibe has been written about in many forums in regards to her rude behavior towards other actors and fans.

On that very show she referred to a few actors as unattractive as well.

I think she will have a short shelf life. I don't appreciate her annoying candor and her flippancy.

Yeah, I would need to know the context. I can't believe Joan would tell her that in a flippant way. She obviously has a look that's difficult to sell.

From the way she describes it, one can assume that exchange probably happened very early at an industry party before Precious was released and anyone knew who Gabourey Sidibe was or going to be. After Precious was released everyone knew who she was. She was everywhere. Joan Cusack would have known who she was and wouldn't have had to ask her if she was an actress.

Joan Cusack probably thought she was being helpful and telling a young girl that she probably assumed was never going to work in Hollywood based on her looks alone. How could she know she was talking to a future Oscar nominee?

It doesn't sound as though Gabourey Sidibe holds it against her. She was just answering Andy Cohen's lame ass question.

In that picture, Joan looks like she's got a bit of a muffin top.

I too would be interested in knowing the context of the conversation. And I'm sure that G.S. is aware of the struggles that actresses like Kathy Bates and Camryn Manheim have had in the business.
